High Que or Kick Ash Basket . . .

. . . or both.

From what I've picked up so far they're both used to keep ash from getting in the side holes.  Is it redundant to get both.

Is one better than the other?

I'm leaning toward the KA Basket.

Your opinion?

Keeping ash accumulation from the side holes is likely a side-benefit of the Basket.
The high-que grate function is to replace the standard grate for improved air-flow thru the lump bed.  I suppose you could postulate that with a better burn you may get less ash accumulation in the side holes but certainly that is far from any addressed benefit.

I would probably go with the basket.  The KAB is now meant to be used without stock fire grate, so it is basically has a high-q grate "built in" so I would say it is redundant to get both.

The high-Q grate is a great upgrade from the stock fire grate and it costs less than the KAB, but if you want the added benefit of protecting the side vents and the ability to remove all the lump then go with the KAB.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

I don't have the KAB, but I do have the Hi-Que grates for both of my large eggs.  I love them. It has changed the way I egg. I can get to temp so much faster than before. Week night cooks after work on a school night were hard, but not anymore.

How much does a KAB for a large cost?

Even with a KAB I still use the stock grate.

Here is MY thought on why. I feel that the wider slots allow bigger pieces of charcoal to drop into the base and cause a crack. Do I have proof of this. No. Have I ever cracked a base in 15 years of egging. No.

I just received my KAB, but haven't done a cook with it yet.

I have had the High Q grate for a while and I can tell you it is a lot better than the stock fire grate. I've been very pleased with the High Q!

Now that I have the KAB in my MBGE, I removed the High Q grate.

What size egg do you have? I may look into selling my High Q now that I have the KAB.

Would the KAB interfere with the Spider if you have one?  I'm thinking probably not.  BTW I have the Hi-Que grate and am fairly happy with it.  Each time the KAB comes up I'm tempted to take the plunge but up until now, at least, I'm content to stir the lump a little in between cooks and use my ash cleaner tool.

I 100% agree with @badinfluence about leaving the stock grate in.  Even with the stock grate in I'm able to tell the difference in the lower draft door settings.  I also feel that it saves on lump with the stock grate in

Both products aid with air flow and cleaning.  I feel the High Que grate gives me easier cleaning as I simply stir ash and drag out bottom vent with ash tool. I don't feel you need both. My 2¢

I find the opposite as with the KAB I can simply lift the remaining coal out and shop vac the ash. It's much faster and less mess than using the ash tool for me.

@badinfluence , umm, if that happens, just use one of your other 12 eggs  =)
  • I've been debating the high que or ash basket also. I change my mind every other day. Last night I read Naked Whiz's review and he mentioned the ash tool might grab the grate on the high que and dislodge it. Is this an issue?

The main reason I'm wanting to buy KAB is, I hate how the ash tool puts ashes into the slider rail on the bottom vent door and onto the lower shelf on my table. I think the KAB will minimize this issue. I know I could use a shop vac but it's not convenient for my setup.

Last question, Is there any reason when shaking the ashes out of the KAB, can you shake it in your yard instead of a trash can? It's just another thing to put out on my deck that I don't want and more of an eye sore than anything. Thanks again for your info.

I have been using Hi-Que's in both of my eggs for months and never had that happen. If you really jammed the ash tool in there and rolled around I guess it could, but who would do that and why?  I don't think that is a concern.

I certainly don't see what it would hurt. I keep an old box in the garage, and I put my ashes in it and take it over to the edge of my yard where bamboo is growing and dump it.

Let us know what you decide. I have never had a KAB, but I love the Hi-Que grates.

Nope ... you'll still have enough ash to fill the slider rail with the KAB.  Sorry.

Have you tried an acid brush to clean out the slider rail after dragging the ash out?  If not, give it a try and see if that doesn't solve some of your problems.
