Want to try my first brisket. Should

I buy the $45.00 brisket at Wallmart or go all out and order from SRF?

The one from Walmart will do just fine.

I'm not gonna tell you how to spend your money but  I would look for the best grade packer brisket (non SRF) I could find and give it a go.  If you have access to Costco and they have briskets, they are likely prime grade.  Go with CAB at a minimum.  The quality going in has the biggest impact on the outcome.  And you likely should have a few under your belt before springing for the high-end cuts.  Brisket cooks are a learning process (like riding a bike) and it takes practice to improve.  But just an opinion...
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

I believe prime at Costco is not everywhere.  At least not in my neck of the woods.

+1. No need to drop $150 on your first brisket.

Personally, I feel if you're cutting your teeth on something, nail the lesser grade first to get comfortable.  After that the guy should be golden.

I for one don't mind the choice at Walmart.

  • I tend to favor the brisket at Sam's Club here in KC.  I've done several cryo-vac briskets from our local store and every one has turned out great.  To me the meat quality goes hand in hand with a good trim job and careful smoking process.

Yeah there is nothing wrong with a choice brisket, I just wouldn't buy any lower than choice though

I've never done a brisket either.  Is $45 the low end or med end?  I doubt I want to spend $150 on my first brisket.

It's about normal.  Personally, I've never spent more than about $80 on a brisket, but I'm not competition cooking either.  I tend to spend $45 - $65 per full brisket, and if I'm lucky I might find one for in the $35 range on sale..

The brisket I cooked this weekend was from Sams, roughly $3.50ish a pound

I'd say start with the walmart brisket.  Good price and when done correctly they are delicious.

Get a whole packer and try to find the flimsiest one. Yes, dig through the fridge and feel each one. Seriously

I was just visiting the meat dept at Walmart today and saw the most hideous brisket I've ever seen.  The fat was rock hard and after being trimmed you'd probably be left with 50% of the original weight.  They had others that looked much better but be sure you research what you should be looking for.

I just started cooking brisket (two so far).  I tried Dr. BBQ brisket flat method with coffee. Its not that expensive and a very simple recipe.

My wife who is not a big BBQ fan loved it, and the flat will easily feed four people. I used the Dizzy Pig Red Eye Express rub. I'm not a coffee fan , but it was awesome.

Long story short go with the flat for the first cook.

I've only done two. Both flats. First was great, second, just ok though it did make for three days of brisket sandwichs for lunch....sweet baby rays and a potatoe roll. Yum city.

I learned not to make a big deal of it. Just buy one and cook it. The world will not end.

Just bought a choice packer that I am putting on tomorrow. It was 82 after tax. 14 lbs.
