Extra time for 2 Boston Butts?

Boehman
Posts: 7
I've never done 2 Boston Butts at the same time, but I'm attempting it this weekend. I know about internal temps and 1.5 hours per pound, and all that, but do I need to plan extra time since I'll have 2 going? Thanks in advance.

They will finish close to the same time but not exactly. Variations in the pieces will alter the internal a little bit over a long time. Make sure that you leave some space between them so they cook as two individuals.Best - Jack

This. If they are touching they will cook as one large piece of meat and take longer. So, separate them by at least an inch or so and plan the cook according to the larger butt. And if you find yourself running short on time, you can bump the temp up to as high as 350 to speed things along.XXL BGE, Karebecue, Klose BYC, Chargiller Akorn Kamado, Weber Smokey Mountain, Grand Turbo gasser, Weber Smoky Joe, and the wheelbarrow that my grandfather used to cook steaks from his cattle

+1 on @Foghorn. Keep them separated so there is airflow around them. That will have them cooking as individuals and give you more bark generating yumminess.
Check your internal temps and they will be close, but will probably finish at separate times.LBGE since 2014

Yes, be sure not to let them touch, who knows what carnage may result from butts touching.
This was 8 butts on an XL. Yes, they touched. Did they cook as one massive piece of meat? No. Did all of them have perfect bark? No.
If possible, don't have them touch. If not, you sacrifice bark and extend the cooking time a bit, but not like it was one piece of meat. If You are doing 2 butts and they are smashed against each other, it will not double the cook time.
