Howdy all. Just picked up a new XL yesterday evening so I only have 1 cook on this beast under my belt so far. Liking what I'm seeing. Started kamado style cooking about a year ago with an Akorn. Figured I'd go cheap in the beginning to see how I liked this way of cooking before I made the big investment. Well many cooks and many pounds of lump later the XL found its way onto the deck. Looking forward to learning a ton about cooking on the BGE from the many wonderful people that seem to be on this site (although I just got the BGE, I've been lurking a while).
Nice to meet you all

Welcome to the asylumI raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

Welcome. Just an observation you said you started cheap with the Akorn Komado cooker. Do you wish you had started with your BGE now that you have it? One last thing my good friend has an Akorn so I gave him a bag of RW in hopes he would enjoy the flavor so much he would stop using lighter fluid...he did not
It kills me but, I guess it's his choice no matter what I do or say. My understanding is his is not ceramic but, instead double wall metal.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
NPHusker, had I known that I would enjoy grilling/smoking with a kamado as much as I do, yes, I would have gotten the BGE in the beginning and saved that $400. Well, not so much saved rather spent on the BGE/eggcessories (feel pretty silly calling accessories that). Don't get me wrong, for the money, the Akorn is a great cooker just not in the same league as the BGE. Yes, it is double walled insulated metal so I guess the lighter fluid won't cause any real harm other than what is the point? Lump starts so easily with a starter cube I see no benefit. -
I agree @Slartibartfast lighter fluid is pointless and ruins the flavor. He tried it a couple of times w/out the lighter fluid and then went back to using it. I dunno
maybe he likes the flavor
