@SkinnyV that's not true I just went and checked. The mini has like an eighth of an inch space in the front if I slide the grate all the way back and the MM has an inch gap when I do that.

I'll have to look, that 9.5 inch grid it came with before the 10" I paid $45 @-) for moved around.
That extra purchase was a mistake as the 9.5 sits on the mini woo fine, does not latch but it works.

  • @FlashkaBob no complaints on the fit but, I'm also using a WOO set-up. W/out the WOO I guess it's a lil loosey goosey. I'm very happy with the purchase.

If you are happy with it, great. Let me ask you something. If you went out and bought a new toilet, brought it home, attached the seat and found no matter what, it was loosey goosey and shifted every time you sat down on it, would you go back out and purchase an additional piece of equipment to help stop you from falling in or would you return it and demand that they make it right? If your favourite drink was whiskey and you went and bought a bottle and brought it home and it was actually more like rum would you accept that they just ran out of the good stuff and substituted it for something they tried to make once but didn't work out or would you take it back and demand that they make it right? Why should BGE be any different?

Yes the 9.5" sucked. I am guessing BGE will make the grate a little larger in time and will get the MM its own fire ring. It sucked how much better the KJ Jr grate for in the MM than the MM grate fit. I was using the KJ grate but sold it so I need to get another one.

@FlashkaBob ... l agree that the MM looks like it could use a unique fire ring that more closely matches the new fire bowl.  It sounds like it works great ... just doesn't match the attention to detail that the other sizes display.

But, please don't imply that using out of country labor is an attempt to rip us off.  The company I retired from both manufactures and sells approximately half their product outside the USA.  Components for those products are manufactured where the best value of cost/quality/availability is provided.  That means that no product is totally "pure" in the country where it's sold.  It also serves to provide the customer with a great product at a reasonable price.

BGE is constantly making business decisions relative to balancing quality and cost.  Sending the manufacturing out of country doesn't mean that it's based only on cost.  It might be that it's the highest quality product available at a reasonable cost.  The company I worked for owns manufacturing facilities in Mexico that produce a high quality product and employ Mexican nationals who take pride in their work ... if the quality wasn't acceptable, facilities would be closed.

Took my MM back to the new BGE store today to have them check the rocking firebox. The issue was the fire ring. They changed out the fire ring. That was helpful. However, the fire ring on the MM is the same as the Small. Therefore the bottom of the ring will not align with the top of the fire box. WYSIWYG.
I know I am being overly picky, but for $600 you would think BGE would engineer a fire ring to fit the MM instead of re-purposing the small fire box
. Just another example of cost out BS companies are foisting on thier customers.
I know, I know, get over it and start cooking.

I have to agree. The company goes to the trouble of designing a new product because they know that they can sell them to BGE enthusiasts like us, not the first time buyer. Lets face it. The guy off the street isn't likely to cough up $600+ for some overweight charcoal BBQ when they could buy a Hibachi for about $50 or less unless they new the advantages of the BGE. Then the company wants to go on the cheap and use a ring that they don't have to spend money on to design. Who cares if it doesn't fit properly. They sure don't! BGE claims to be an American company yet contracts all of the labour out to Mexico where they can pay a wage of a buck or two and pocket the huge profits. I don't know for a fact but my guess is that BGE doesn't have any more than 50% of the purchase price invested in any of their products. And they can't afford to develop a new fire ring? WTF??? Those of you that have purchased the MM should be complaining to the mother ship until they change the fire ring to one that actually is made for the product that they're selling. That's my 2 cents.

I am guessing you do not own a MM. With-out owning what is your 2 cents worth? You are typing lot and lots and lots of words. I would be interested if you put your money in the pot. The MM works just fine as it is. These are made to cook food and do just that very well. They are not Lexis needing high tolerances, they cook food. Damn good food.

You guys can defend it all you want the fact is they put out a piece mealed product 6 months late. If my first egg fit together like the MM I would have never bought another one. I have seen many of the knock offs and even the crappy ones look like they had more thought put into the design than the MM.

At least his deuce won't get stuck in the big gap between the fire ring and the bowl.

At least it would stay on the grate in the KJ and not slide into the huge gap. :)

@Lit ... honest question, not meant in a negative manner.  Have you told BGE what you said above.  Good companies react to negative feedback from customers.  Companies like BGE almost have to because the cost to their brand name is too great to ignore.

@lit I know you own a MM. But, how many others on this thread bitching and moaning have one? Have any of these complaints been directed to BGE support or customer service? I'm not a rocket scientist but, I'm pretty sure this forum won't provide resolve to said complaints. Although it's a slow Friday night so please proceed with the discussion. B-)

Here's some food for thought. If BGE does redesign the fire ring and grid sizing will they be willing to provide every person that has already purchased with the mods. :-?

@Lit ... please do, 'cuz if I ever get the bug for one, I'd like to not be on the "bleeding" edge of development.

@NPHuskerFL ... geez, I hope not.  Then they'll have to increase the price and it'll be too expensive for me.

    @Lit

I agree fully with you...as a Quality Assurance manager for 35 years this is un-acceptable fit and finish. As you stated the time to market was delayed, and if the ceramic is cast in MX there should be no reason a unique mold could not be made for the MM fire ring.

I am certain it cooks fine but, that said, if you had a chip or crack in your brand new $80 cast iron D.O it would still cook fine...and no one would find that acceptable.

So heck yes...voice your opinion to BGE. If they truly are customer focused they will listen to the VOC.

Not sure about the others complaining and the MM does cook fine but my very first post about the MM I noticed these flaws. Its not like the folks at BGE didn't notice I am pretty sure they just needed to get a product out. The grate has a full inch gap when its sitting on the fire ring they would have to be blind to think man that's a perfect fit.
