Just set the turkey on fire

Eggless at my sisters and she asked me to grill a turkey. 24 pounder in the oven already. I had asked her to get about a 13 pound bird so I could spatch it on the gasser I guess 20 pounds is close to 13 pounds. I managed to cut out the back and got the gasser to 350 and put on the bird, which barely fit. Looked pretty good for about 20 minutes, so I went in for a drink. Came out 5 minutes later and flames were shooting out of the grill from the drippings on fire. It wasn't easy with the whole grill on fire but I managed to get the turkey off and into a pan. It's now black from the smoke and the bottom is scorched. It's back on the grill in a pan. We'll see what happens. Pics to follow.

It's starting to brown, which is hiding the black oil fire smoke that covered the thing a bit ago. Sorry, but no pics of the flaming bird. I was a bit busy to go in and get a camera.

  • Tj - you are a true egger - No egg would ever disrespect you like that gasser, damn, a guy can't even go for a drink! You may have already done so, but toss some root veggies, carrot, celery, onion and some citrus juice in that pan - will help ease the dripping char. Good luck, Happy Thanksgiving...

Definitely salvageable. Just added a little Cajun flavor (blackened - some folks pay high dollar for it).

If anyone can, I think you can save it and pull this one off on a gasser...you've got my vote and my confidence !!!!!

Been there...done that years ago pre-Egg! Had a turkey on a rotisserie over a gas grill . Lots of folks over enjoying themselves and the liquid refreshments. Being the good host, I was socializing and not paying as much attention as I should have. The grease caught fire. SWMBO saw it from the kitchen and it looked scarry since grill was built in against wall of house (with hood) but under eaves. She called fire department. In the meantime , got fire out with baking soda . Fireman arrived in full gear along with police and all was good. They said the hood is what saved the house. Needless to say, I was embarrassed and still hear about it from friends. SWMBO says the turkey was cooked by Jack Daniels!!

P.S. Although the turkey was charred on the outside, the inside was still moist and delicious! Happy Thanksgiving!

  • At least you didn't have the fire dept involved! That's classic. You definitely win the title of the day so far.

I was certain this was going to be a turkey fryer incident before I opened the thread. I'm laughing out loud. Great post. My brother set his driveway on fire one day frying a bird. He's frying today and I'll see him in a few. After my mad max bird is done. We will have fun comparing the fried bird to the egged bird.

Finished turkeys. The one from the grill is certainly not a Norman Rockwell looking bird. Note the little plastic thingy hasn't popped. I'm trusting the thermopen. The one from the big clock in the kitchen looks pretty. Let Em rest then we'll see how they taste.

@Tjcoley-regardless of the end-result, that's a hell of a save.  I've been down that road on a T'day visit before-"I can grill one on a gasser that's better than one you can fry..."  I salvaged the bird and the gasser rep as low as it is (as I'm no fan of the fryer gig) and we all lived happily ever-after.  Have a great banquet and Thanksgiving.

Thanks everybody. It turned out ok. I had a few folks blind taste test both and nobody could tell.

IMO the grill bird looks just fine. The oven bird looks a tad anemic in a way... It's too evenly brown.

The button thermo mat not have popped because it melted and got stuck :D
