I tryed a bag of dragons breath and it burned good but it seemed much more smokey than RW or OO. @SGH‌

And I agree RW and OO are both excellent. WGWW is also good but it seemed like it takes longer to get going than the others. I use it on the low and slow cooks.... @SGH‌

No offense taken at all my friend. Everyone likes and dislikes different things. I fully understand the RO quagmire. It's very cheap and readily available in my area. I used it for 2 1/2 years and was happy with it. It's not a bad lump in my estimate. It just lags behind the others. I have cooked what I feel to be some pretty good meals using RO in the past few years. Your thoughts and opinions are always welcome on my posts my friend. No harm no foul as they say!

Well, let me ask, when you use RW or OO do you find yourself adding wood that you ordinarily would not have added.
I just want to egg the very best food I'm capable of. If that calls for a change of fuel then I want to do it.
Oh yea, just got 60 lbs of 9-12 ct fresh out of the gulf shrimp. They were swimming last night. Tonight Benton's bacon wrapped shrimp on egg.

If I'm looking for smoke flavor, I add wood.  If I'm cooking with only charcoal, I want minimal smoke flavor, other than the natural char/slight smoke from lump (which I consider different from wood smoke which is more concentrated).

I don't want significant smoke flavor from my lump, which tastes dirtier to me.

You would be remiss if you didn't do at least some of those "BBQ style".  (egg not required:  http://www.mrbsbistro.com/recipes_shrimp.php )

I would add a bit of fresh rosemary to the above recipe.

Rockwood will impart almost no smoke flavor on its own. It as near "neutral" as one could ask for when cooking with lump. You have total control of over the smoke profile. Now if you want a very nice oak smoke profile without having to add wood one would be hard pressed to do any better than Ozark Oak. It is par excellent in this arena. Again both are excellent. I now use and recommend both for different cooks. Congradulations on the shrimp. Picking up 100 pounds myself Friday night.

BBQ shrimp in the style of NO is outstanding to say the least. 2 weekends ago I indulged myself on them at OceanA while visiting with brother Head and his wife . They were par excellent.

  • Does anyone know where I could find Ozark Oak or Rockwood in the central jersey/trenton area? If not I guess I might have to try and take the drive to Firecraft in PA?I have only had my large for about 2 months and initially bought 2 20lb bags of BGE. Now that I have gone through one I am just looking to try some others.

I have the same dilemma living on the gulf coast. I'm forced to order it. No local dealers for either. It's worth ordering though my friend. Well worth it.

  • @dukecush‌ Rockwood has a good dealer finder on their site. May be worth visiting to save some drive time.
  • @SGH. Thanks. I have also thought about trying Wicked Good Charcoal as there are a bunch of dealers in MA back where my parents are. Figure I can pick some up the next time I go and visit.

I have never tried wicked myself. But I have heard great things about it. Based on what others say, it's a top tier lump its self.

Sorry, we do not have anyone in NJ yet.  Firecraft is going to be the closest.

@SGH Any Ace Hardware on the Gulf Coast can order and have it in a few days.  SKU: 8400772   I'll take a look at my list and see if any stores in Biloxi have ordered it yet.
  • @stlcharcoal‌ I assume ACE in Ga would be the same. Currently 1 hr one way to Cartersville.

Thank you brother. I certainly appreciate the tip. I wasn't aware that the Ace's carried it. Again, thanks.

Yes, any Ace in GA can order it using that SKU above.  Cartersville stocks it, as do about 20 other stores around ATL.  The stores that regularly stock it are on our website.

@stlcharcoal‌- I just did a location search on Ace hardware stores and it looks like there are 2 close to me. One in Biloxi and one in Ocean Springs. I didn't even know they were there. I will check out both stores on Monday. Again thanks for the heads up.

My parents head back to Florida tomorrow from their place in Arkansas. They picked up 20 bags of OO and 16 are for me. $5.24 a bag at Harps.

Thanks. Wasn't sure how much they were gonna get me. They come through twice a year so I may be able to get enough from them that I can use OO year round.

@Lit- You will love the OO. It has a very sweet and soothing smell when burning. It's a phenomenal lump for sure. It and Rockwood are my 2 personal favorites.

Ordering Rockwood through Ace is silly (at least in NOLA) - $26 plus tax for 20 lbs.  And you have to wait for delivery.

I am now a regular with Firecraft.  The Rockwood tends to get a little more broken up than the OO, but I like both (I think because OO is in the 10lb bags.  I'm in for 100 lbs every month or two.

I can't recommend Firecraft enough. Very happy customer.
