I Don't Understand ! Firegrates 101

I use the BGE fire grate that came with my XL. I have been using it since the 1st of the year. I have never had a problem with airflow. What is your experience with using the aftermarket grates or ash basket ???

Thanks in advance,

Donnie

The XL firegrate has larger holes than the smaller eggs. No need for an aftermarket on the XL.

Ash basket from my understanding makes it easier to clean the egg out. I don't have one, can't comment for sure.

Agree with @DMW - although High-Que offers an XL grate, I have never seen one. MBGE benefits from the High-Que grate, no wiggle rod required...excellent temp control.

To clean, the ash rake is ideal as long as you have some space under the egg. (an air gap or table nest is ideal) Slide a pan under and rake everything out, no vacuum needed. Also, the rake turned 90º fits between the fire box and base and can rake ash out of this hard to get to spot, no need to remove the fire ring and fire box.
