First cook with Rockwood

Did my first ever cook using Rockwood Lump.  That stuff was amazing.  Neutral smoke and came to temp perfectly.  Chunks of lump as big as my fist when I poured the bag into a tub to sort prior to loading up the egg.

@stlcharcoal..... ya'll have some good stuff.  Will do a butt with it this weekend and will have pics of that cook.  Unfortunately, I dropped my chicken when I stepped in a hole in the back yard......  No pic, but the dog ate it up real quick!

I'm on my first bag of it as well. I think I got a bad bag because I was not impressed with the size of the pieces at all. Other thN that, so far so good!

I'm pleased as well, finishing my first bag as well.

  • Smallest piece so far was the size of a golf ball....  Much better than the RO I have been using.  Price-wise, yes, it is more expensive, but I loved how it burned!  Made some cookies after the chicken, those didn't make it into the house for the kids to see!!!!  Sorry, kiddo's!!!! :D

I gladly pay the price for it at Firecraft and have it shipped to me since it's not available in Chicago. So good and great flavor.

@DaveRichardson I totally agree with you. I love it. I see all of the Royal Oak zombies on the Facebook Green Eggers page, and I can't help but laugh.

Some of them even admit that they only use it because it is cheap! WTF? I have two large eggs and well over $2,000 invested in them, BUT I am going to try and save a few bucks with my lump?? I don't think so.

That is insane. I know that some here love Royal Oak. Great. If it makes you happy rock on, but for the love of all things holy please don't use it ONLY because it is cheap. Your egg deserves better than that.

Same thing here, used it for the first time over the weekend instead of RO and couldn't be more pleased. Was amazed how little smoke there was with the Rockwood and no creosote flavor on the food. Looking forward to many great cooks in the future using RW.

Ok, OK....I am a royal oak fan, and you are right, because it is cheap.  Although it is cheap, I think it is still pretty good.  However, I do not really have anything to compare it to.  I will be ordering some rockwood soon.

BTW, thank you for the rant, it will likely help out my egging!

I had to dive about 20 miles to even get the Rockwood.  Was it worth it?  You better believe it!

Do I still have some RO?  Yes.  I have about 4 different lumps on hand right now that all have different flavor profiles.  Different cooks call for different flavors.  Chicken, Pork, Beef, even baking breads and cookies have been on my egg.

So far I haven't found a lump that I'd NEVER buy again....  But I'm still going to try new ones every few weeks to months.  I'll build my own "database", but I will still use Thenakedwhiz while I'm shopping.

@EGGjlmh you and your egg will than me later.

I can't get anything locally except BGE lump. I had to order Rockwood from Firecraft.com. It was the best move I ever made.

Try it and report back. I bet you will love it!

We do have one dealer in Chicago........Hofherr Meat Co in Northbrook.  Not sure how far that is from you, but they have 10# bags if you need them.

Thanks for all the kind words!

What do you mean by neutral smoke?
What if I like the smoke flavor...

Well, I just bought some Ozark Oak and Rockwood from Firecraft.  So I guess I'll find out myself!

I DO like the flavor that BGE/RO leaves with the food, though.  So hopefully this isn't too neutral!

It will still give you a light smoke / charcoal taste, it's just not overpowering like some "charcoals".  Some of these can overpower fish or poultry.  Either way, if it's not enough for you, just throw in a chunk of smoke wood in the flavor of your choosing.

You don't know what kind of wood is in most bags of charcoal, especially the SA stuff.  That smoke might be variety that is not of your liking (mesquite, hickory, etc.)  So we give you a very flavor neutral smoke, and allow you to use your own wood to control the flavor and intensity.

  • @KiterTodd‌ the nice thing about mellow smoke neutral lump is that it allows you create the exact smoke profile you want with smoke wood as opposed to getting the generic "sooty" flavor that you get with cheaper lump like cowboy and to a lesser extent RO.

  • I'd like to try rockwood just for my personal comparison, but buying ozark oak at 5.49 i just cant justify it. Love my ozark oak, though.

They are very similar in quality. At that price point I would just go with OO as well.

However seeing as they're both a similar cost to me ill stock up on both... after all variety is the spice of life \:D/

I agree. I would probably go without or just use briquettes rather than use Cowboy again. Cleaning the ash from the briquettes would be a PIA, but at least my food wouldn't have an acrid taste.
