Sorry, I'm a little slow...

Can someone help me out with the raised grate setup for direct cooking?  I've read about bricks and empty beer cans in the PSetter notches of the fire ring.  I had some bricks lying around, but they might be a little too big (long) to achieve what I'm trying to do.  Beer cans work.  I guess three empties positioned strategically would stabilize with the grate with the chickens holding them in place.  I must be over thinking this...  Hell, it's only Tuesday!  Any help is appreciated!

I'm afraid to try to balance anything on the fire ring because if it slips, your food ends up in the coal.

With a large BGE I found that the best way is to buy a second grate, maybe a 13" at Home Depot and then put the larger grate on the fire-ring, bricks on the large grate and the small grate on the bricks.  That will take you up to felt level or higher.  If you're using regular bricks,, you ight want to wrap them in heavy-duty aluminum foil.

This works like a charm! It's surprisingly sturdy. If your looking for a solution without spending any $$$ I would say beer cans would be the way to go.

Your bricks don't have to sit down in the notches.  Some of my first raised directs were done with 3 bricks I pulled out of my landscaping.  Lay them length wise across the notches.  You may have to balance them a bit to get them to stay.

You can kind of see the way I have the bricks set up here.  Sorry for the sideways photo.

I also know have a 2nd grate option, as well as a homemade Woo that is still in progress.  Still would throw the old bricks in if I needed to.

Here is an old post about that same thing.

RRP has a picture, in that thread, that shows you one way of doing it.
