No need to soak. Chips or chunks doesn't matter - as long as the amount of wood is the same. A couple of chunks equal a lot of chips.

Fist full of chips equals a chunk. Of course that depends on your fists.bearBGE said:By amount of wood is the same? Same as what?
Soaking not needed, you want them to smoke, not steam.MSV Chill Spot

The egg has restricted air flow, so the smoke wood will smoke without flaring - unless you open the dome to look at it - then it will burst into flame and scorch out your eyes - so don't peek!
) As noted above, chips or chunks does not matter. I like chips as you can spread them throughout the lump easier than three or four chunks - just a personal preference.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad! -
It's all fun and games until somebody gets their eyes scorched out. @Skiddymarker might be on to something. Heed his warning b-(Steven

I prefer chunks. And I never soak them on the egg. I used to soak em for use on my old Brinkman smoker and occasionally on my old offset that I used to have. But, really I see no purpose or need to soak them for use on the egg.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

When using chips, it takes more than you think to equal the amount of wood in a large chunk.__________________________________________It's not a science, it's an art. And it's flawed.- Camp Hill, PA -
I use chips for grilling/short cooks and chunks for smoking/long cooks. I also wear socks with sandals so what do I know.
