Inaugural Egg Mission!

Well, after much reading on the forum, my LGE arrived as well as several of Nature Boy's much anticipated rubs: Dizzy Dust, Raging River, and Cowlick, plus a sampler for a good friend of mine. I figured something simple to start, so I went for TNW's "Dead Simple Spatchcock Chicken" recipe, which is on the egg as we speak![p]Two Question for the group:
1 - Before I started, a checked the dome thermometer and my Pyrex and both were right on at 212. Now, during the cook, the dome thermometer is reading 350 degrees, while the Pyrex, all the way through, and 1.5" out of a small red potato, approx. 1" above a raised grill is only reading 260 degrees. I've read other posts where folks said to expect a 25 to 50 degree temp difference, but this is almost 100 degrees. Any suggestions or thoughts?[p]2 - Any ideas for a catchy handle? Someone was mentioning a couple of days ago that no "lumpies" exist, but I don't really aspire to be known as Lumpy! Maybe TNW's apprentice since his site is such a great resource, or just EggApprentice for short?[p]Thanks to all of the great individuals on this forum that make this a really useful resource for all of us Neweggs.[p]Rob Sabella

The temp differential is not unusual if it is at the start. The temps should start 'coming together' later in the cook.[p]Toy Man
  • Toy Man,[p]I am about 40 mins into the cook with the same differental, but I will keep checking. Thanks.

  • NeedEggHandle,
Well, "Little Whiz", "Mrs. Whiz" and "Scoobie the Wonder Dog" are all taken, but the rest is an open field! Have you looked at the page where you can look a profiles? I think there is an Eggprentice, so EggApprentice might be too similar. Besides, you won't be an apprentice for long![p]TNW

  • NeedEggHandle, Here are a couple ideas.[p]1. Stop opening the egg. Give the thermometers a chance to stabilize.[p]2. Put the pyrex directly under the BGE thermometer and see what happens.[p]3. when finished check both in boiling water, approx. 212 degrees F.[p]4. can you take the pyrex out of the potato and see what happens.[p]5. Drink more and they will begin to look alike.[p]Happy Holidays, Tom

  • NeedEggHandle,[p]Dos Huevos is already taken, but Zwei Eier is available.

How about Eggmission for your handle? That chick is gonna be one of the best you've ever tasted and perfect for your inaugural cook.
    Have fun!

  • GrillMeister,
did I miss something or when did he say he has two eggs? Are you back in the country? If so, welcome home & Fröhliches Weihnachten. Joe

seldom in a man's lifetime does he have the chance to create his own nickname or in this case "handle". Rather than to have someone who doesn't even know you suggest a name why not give yourself some time and then come back here and tell US what you want to be known as. Take the time and you'll find that lurking creative gene somewhere!

  • Smokin Joe,[p]He doesn't have TWO eggs YET, but with a handle like Zwei Eier, he'll have a great excuse for the second one.[p]I'm done traveling for business this year, but will be close to your neck of the woods in a couple of days in Sevierville, TN.[p]Fröhliches Weihnachten to you too![p]Cheers,[p]Ed[p]
  • GrillMeister, And all I know is "ein bier bitte".

  • The Naked Whiz,[p]Well when I was a kid, I loved my Green Machine, remember that fancy "Big Wheel"? Now, I have a new Green toy, so might as well go with TheGreenMachine since I did not see it taken out on the profile page. Thanks again for the great site.

  • GrillMeister,
ahhhhh, good point. As the owner of two myself, I should have been thinking more strategically... LOL[p]Safe travels to you my friend! Joe
