XL or L

OK so I'm a newbie and I currently have a Large. I'm thinking of selling it and getting an XL? Or is it better to just add a Small or Med to the Large? I like the idea of havering two separate temps going but I also like the surface area of the XL. I would like to hear some of the ideas and experience that is out there. Thanks in advance for the help.

How about keeping the L and adding an XL? And then a Small, Med, etc, etc... ;)

I have an XL and Small. I have cooked on the Large as well. If I had to choose just one, it would be the XL.

I have a large and I am going to add another large to the mix. I don't think I could ever part with an egg.

If you are gonna add a egg I would go with another large. If ya are gonna sell I will give ya 250.00 :D but i say add a large then you have 2 temps if needed and more cooking area then the xl

Add a large so you don't have to re-buy everything...

I have a large as well. I think it would make more sense to add another Egg, maybe a medium. I say this because it gives you more options to cook different things at different temps at the same time. IMO

I hadn't considered adding a large, I'm building a table and I'm trying to plan ahead for whatever direction I go this fall. I realize I need to learn to use a tiered or swing rack. I LOVE my egg so far. The extra room I need is usually for apps.imageimage

Well sing as you don't have the plans done yet let's talk....i would do as I did...get them all with a few extras to boot.

I still would never sell a egg as I promise at some time you really will want them different temps...no reverse sear if you have 2 eggs

I have a Med, Large, and XL.......and used to have a Mini.

2-3 Larges is the way to go in my opinion.  I don't care for my XL at all and will probably sell it now that I have learned the ways of my Rebel 23.

I have a large and I'm thinking about getting a XL. I see the benefits of getting another large, sharing components, etc. However, I'm thinking about getting into the catering business and I think I will need the extra space that an XL (or 2 provides).

I have an XL and a Medium at my home.  If I could only have one I would have an XL.  Love the surface area and options.  I use the Medium for a single chicken,  steaks, burgers, or single pork butt.

I have a large in my vacation home along with a Adjustable Rig to increase capacity.  It works but is not as easy at the XL.

    Good luck!

@johnkitchens‌ . that is a thought. however, I don't think I could ever move it if I needed to. I can see a large (for personal use) and 2-3 XL's on my back patio. Just don't tell SWMBO!!!!!

I agree that it would be very hard to transport. Go ahead and get a few XL's. If you are in the catering business they will be write off's anyway!

@RiverDoc my wife thought i lost my mind after the 4th egg. I have never had all 9 eggs going at 1 time but have had 5 going at once. and had 4 going with the meat monster going for a larger cook.

I started with just a medium and then added a large and am glad I kept the medium.  If I had it to do over I would have kept the medium and added an XL instead.

That being said, I am currently thinking of adding an XL, I just really hate to part with the 2 that I have........I know, I know, it never ends, first you get 1 egg, then 2 eggs, then.....well you get the idea, we will all have as many eggs as badinfluence one of these days.

XL and M at my house, but XL and L would also be a good combo.  I've heard very few first time buyers say, "I wish I had bought a smaller Egg.", but have heard quite a few indicate that if they had to do it again they would buy larger.  I got the XL first and if I could only have one it would be the XL.  If you need the acreage, go for the XL you won't regret it.

@badinfluence‌ . I know you have a lot of eggs and the custom cooker. Any suggestions? I was thinking about an Egg only catering business. Maybe that is naive?

@tulocay only fired the xxl 1 time so far just to see how it cooked and lump consumption. did 4 butts on it so didn't take pictures. I could have done them on the xl with room to spare. It was easy for temp control and did not use much lump at all. well took a full 20 lbs to fill but more then enough left over.

@tulocay problem with egg only is to transport the eggs to the location. i don't so call do a catering business but i have been hired to do large cooks for reunions and parties. i WONT do weddings as i used to own a limo company and have had my fair share of brides so won't do that again. I have noticed when doing a hog or something people really like to see the whole thing on the cooker before anything is cut. guess its the WOW factpr

@badinfluence‌ . Thanks for the comments. I'm just kicking tires at this point. Starting to put the beginnings to a business plan together. I'm thinking, cook on my eggs at home (until it gets unwieldy) and transport said food to location. I certainly see the advantage of cooking a whole pig on location and that is not out of the question.

@badinfluence Just curious, when you do whole hog for an onsite event, do you do the whole cook there, or transport it in the Meat Monster towards the end?

@DMW that depends honestly. if they only rented a spot at a park i transport it (shhhush not supposed to do that in iowa) but have done stuff at farms when i bring it behind the motorhome and have everything there including a bed to sleep on.

I try to tell them it is cheaper to do just butts and will most likely going to be a better meal all around but some really want the WOW of the whole hog

I have an XL and a medium. For me it is the perfect combination. I use the XL when doing larger cooks, and the medium most of the time for quick dinners for just the GFU and I. On larger cooks, I frequently will be using the medium at a different temp for veggies, etc. - lots of flexibility. I certainly think it's a great way to go. I can see the benefits of having 2 larges, but if a cook takes both, then you lose the flexibility of having different temps. If you can afford it, I would go XL and then if adding a second egg, medium.
