Don't be afraid to open it and look. If in doubt brother take a peek. It won't hurt a thing.

Took everything out and had a look, coals glowing away so that's good. I put it on at 290 dome, pinched back the vents a touch more, there isn't really anymore room to close them so hopefully its good. The plus side is listening to my neighbors having a fire in their yard. Young and drunk, entertaining!

I was reading back through you post and I think that you misunderstood someone or they told you wrong. There is no way that you can leave the bottom vent wide open and control the temp with the top vent. It ain't happening my friend. Do not attempt it.

You can do that, use one or the other exclusively to control the temp, the issue is what temp you can maintain and that's probably a function of the "leakiness" of the system - gaskets, DFMT.  I find using both vents allows you to go lower and be more resistant to wind effects.

I have the bottom open about 1\8", and about the same on 2 holes on top..very very little. I did read that so ewhere though, that's how he says he cooks lo and slow. I still don't see how its possible. You doing an all nighter? Making puppies on the night shift maybe?

You can have the bottom vent almost closed but not closed entirely.

You can close the bottom vent a lot but not all the way. Here is my setting for 225 degrees.image

Temp was down to 160 so I opened the top a hair, opened the top and blew inside, heard some crackling so its still burning! Thanks for the help, much appreciated!! I'm going to keep an eye on it for awhile yet that's for sure. Wishing I had a maverick that's for sure. (And a digi q or something)!

@noregard‌ a couple of things to keep in mind. The egg is very efficient in maintaining temp so long as there is fuel, oxygen and fire. Fire triangle. Don't over complicate it. A. Determine you have fuel & fire B. Determine you have air. C. Stabilize your desired temp and chill. If you're not using a pit controller it is much easier to maintain 250℉-275℉ish.

Good training night-once you find the "force" then you may sleep on an overnight cook or be on the forum still waiting to get to the "promised land".  YMMV- :)

Not sure what his target temp was. Someone had told him that he could shut the bottom vent entirely. I was just trying to rectify this misnomer.

@noregard - set it like SGH's pictures and hit the sack.  You can adjust the temp in the morning and speed it up or slow it down.  Just get up early.  Count the screen squares - he's got it open 2.

My vents closed more than both of those, and temps are 280.  just hoping to get it to stabilize a bit.

    Don't you guys sleep?!

I must admit, I'm honoured to be getting advice from some knowledgable guys.

@noregard-sometimes the euphoria of the over-night BGE eggsperience is tough to eggnore!  And again sometimes we really should take the night off.  Right answer in about 4-5 hours!

Oh man, haven't seen that in awhile!  Gotta get me one o' them!

Sitting at 270*, right where I want to be!  Internal has gone up 12* already, surprising to me, thought it would take quite awhile before it started to change.

@noregard‌ I'm noticing your posting frequently. I'm definitely not a master at temperature control, but how much time are you giving the Egg to adjust? I also noticed that you said you opened it and blew in it to get it going again. Try to make small adjustments and wait until the Egg stabilizes.

You could have had a big fire and a lot of heat built up in the ceramic.  Set it up like SGH and don't worry about it.
