Adjustable Rig Rig Extender and Dome Thermometer

I ordered my Adjustable Rig and extender today and it has already shipped. I was told that with the rig extender on, I will need to put the clip that holds my dome thermometer in place on the outside of the egg to move the thermometer out a little so it doesn't scrub. Are there any other solutions that will prevent the thermo from flying out of the hole? Maybe move the clip toward the end of the dome thermometer on the inside and cut a piece of wine cork to fill the gap on the outside? Or does cork burn with high heat? Not a big problem....just wanting to have it figured out before the AR arrives.

Many do cork without issue. I've done it with the clip on the outside, works fine.
  • I haven't had the clip on my thermo at all since I got the AR. If by chance the cook touches the thermo, it just pushes it out however far it needs to (if it is touching the meat it would obviously give a false reading). It is rarely an issue though. Actually not sure I have ever had an issue with that.

I took the clip off my XL awhile back and removed the clip from my small when I got it. They are around here somewhere, not sure where though...

I use my extender a lot and have never had issue with the dome thermo....however I removed the clip as It's useless, gravity will keep it in place. Unless your cooking butts atop the extender i dont think it will touch anything.

I did a pork butt on my extender last weekend (had ribs underneath), and it's the first time I ever had an issue with the therm hitting the meat.  I just moved the butt back a little on the grid and it was fine.

Tossed all clips in garbage. I use one or two wooden toy wheels from Hobby Lobby as needed. image

The clip is useless! all 5 of my eggs have them removed and after several years of moving them around on the work bench I just tossed them in the trash can. I like to turn the thermometer so my target temp is up at the 12:00 o'clock position so I can look from a distance and see if the temp is where I want it. If one turns the thermometer with the clip on, it can change the calibration of it.

Don't have any corks or any thing else on the outside. When loading up the adjustable rig with large amounts of butts I just remove the thermometer and look through the top of the dome when putting it back in to make sure it doesn't touch the meat. Oh you will love your adjustable rig too, great product from a great company.

I use an AR with the extender and D ring grate for almost every cook My thermometer is the stock general issue. Never had a single problem and I have done several large cuts of meat, turkey, etc.

I've used stainless steel wing nuts or couplers as spacers on the outside so the clip can stay in a keep the thermo in place.
