As far as Charlotte goes, Midwood Smokehouse or Bill Spoon's gets my vote.

I'll say Midwood Smokehouse in Charlotte is pretty good. I grew up on Stameys in Greensboro and Hurseys in Burlington. Allen and Sons in Chapel Hill. Hills borough BBQ Company is good too! Woodlands in Blowing Rock also gets my vote. Supposedly good BBQ in Salter Path at the beach at Big Oak Drive In, but I always get a shrimp burger there!

Always enjoyed Clyde Cooper's in downtoen Raleigh.  Bill Ellis in Wilson has one of the best buffets you will find.

The brisket definitely wasn't dry at Macs when I was there last November. It had been sliced, thrown back on the grill for a bit, and then sauced. Not for the brisket purists by any stretch, but still tasty IMHO.
