How long will she burn

Ok did my second 2.5 lb pork shoulder yesterday with the pitmaster IQ.
Set it and forget it at 250. Was done in in 4 hours.
My question is on a medium egg will she go 10 to 12 hours on a load of lump ?
After I pulled the shoulder I let the egg alone to see how long it would go. By 9 PM it was about spent. Temp was at 170 and not but a few lumps left.
I filled the lump to the bottom of the fire ring and fired it up at about 3 PM.
So this load went about 5.5 hours.
If I fill it to the top of the fire ring will she go 10 or 12 hours for an overnight?
Or will only a large or xxl BGE stay lit that long for a 8 pound butt or a brisket of 14 hours.
I see people going 14 to 20 hours on a low and slow but are those only the bigger eggs.

    What lump are you using?

  • I've gone 27+hrs on my egg at 275* then let it rip. it stayed up above 300* for at least 30 hrs. I was blown away. My geuss is that It will go a long time with a low temp.

With my mediums, no auto-stoker, I expect a minimum of 12 hours, dome 250, filled to near the top of the fire ring. I recall going as long as 18, and still had a bit of lump left.

    Using Rockwood lump,
It was a mix of large and small pieces.
Maybe if I fill to the top of the fire ring I will get that 12 hours

12 hours should be a breeze. Something sounds off with your burn only going 5 hours or so.

Lump was only filled to the bottom of the fire ring.
What could be off with the burn? You light it close it and set the pit to 250 and it stays there. Not that hard or that big of a learning curve.
Yes I have been doing this since 85 but this is the second time I have tried it low and slow with a controller so this why I ask

You should get 12 hrs without even going to the fire ring......I've hit 30 hours in my Large and Medium at 250F if I filled all the way to the top of the fire ring.
  • I have gone 22 hrs on my medium and probably could have longer but the food was done so I shut her down.

On my MBGE 12 hours is not an issue, I don't do overnights so never needed more than 12 hours. Much depends on the lump, some lasts much longer than others.

If my XL is cleaned out good and loaded to the top on the fire box. it will burn for 24-25 hours at 250.
