Anyone ever cook fajitas directly on the coals?

I tried searching but couldn't find much. In a couple places I've seen where people have referenced the ability to cook fajita meat directly on the coals of lump charcoal. Can anyone provide more info on how to do this? Won't it taste like ash? What's the advantage over cooking on the grid? Thanks guys.

Have not but you used to see it a lot and with steaks. Kind of faded out somewhat. This worked a couple of days ago. This started way down low and was raised after I got the char I wanted.

I do it regularly - including yesterday. It is especially fun when camping. Here is a video that explains a lot. You won't get ash on the meat if you do it while the coals are hot orange. If you want until they are all ash-colored (did that once) and falling apart it is less than ideal.

never done it for fajitas but i like it for steak. you don't get flair ups at the point of contact because the steak kills the air in that spot.first have a good fire going, this is what I look for (note best pic I had and I used a small grid here)

Yep, and you get bonus points if you also cook your veggies directly on the coals and then make pico de gallo or salsa out of them. If you are looking for technique or info, try looking up Alton Brown's Good Eats video on it. he did it in a weber, but its the same deal.
