egg size for 2nd egg

Stopped by the dealer today...
Medium. .. $835
Small..... $655

I'm interested in a small. I have the ps and Ci grid already. The medium caught my eye. At 115 lbs it is still mobile. Any input from medium owners?

I greatly enjoyed mine. Easy to move with minimal assistance. Less accessories than the small when I still had it.

Drive to Cullman, AL and you can get either one a lot cheaper.

If you buy a medium I will trade you a couple bags of Ozark Oak for the cast grid and plate setter for the small.

I recently changed my mind about what I think the ideal combo would be. I'm in favor of 2 larges, maybe a mini too if you are a mobile egger.. I kind of like my small, but its more temperamental and harder to clean than the large. I don't think I really save an appreciable amount of lump, given that the small has to be cleaned more frequently and needs a bit more love than the large.

Folks say that the medium works just like the large does, so if you don't need a lot of accessories, that may be the way for you to go. I'm not so sure that I would recommend a small as the second egg.

Those prices sound somewhat high though - I paid about $550 for my small (nest included) in May. And if you are really looking for another egg, wait until Salado and see what a demo egg would cost.

  • Medium owner here-happy medium owner. It cooked a 12 pound turkey for thanksgiving and with a rib rack can cook two or three racks of ribs. For two people it is great. It is a little heavy to considered mobile for me. I think of small light weight grills for mobile if this means moving it regularly.
During my year or so of ownership, there has never been a time I wished for a larger egg. It does have to be cleaned sometimes and every few months I remove the firebox and completely sweep every ash from around it.

  • I'm just copy and pasting my response from another thread someone was asking the same thing.

"Medium...  Its the redheaded step-child of the Egg world, doesn't get the love it deserves. With some creativity I've fit 20# of butt on it and think I've topped out at 6 racks of ribs with some juggling, but at the same time, doing cooks for 1 or 2 people feels completely reasonable on it.  The thing is a workhorse, and just light enough I can load it in my car myself if I pull out the guts first, easy fully loaded with two people."

I'll add in I've also gotten 31 hours straight out of one load of lump at 250 on the medium

I'm gonna get a sh!tsorm over this but I have used my small a handful of times in seven or eight years. Just don't like it. It will soon be placed in front of my raised deck and hooked up as a smoke source. Medium or mini if you can't do what @charlesmaneri suggests.

@caliking is right. The small is a pain in the ass to clean. I still love the small though. I checked with my dealer and a small is $469 and a medium is $569.

  • My Medium is my everyday Egg.  It's on the deck right off of the kitchen and is just perfect size to cook a complete meal for my wife and 2 kids. Really depends how many people you consistently cook for and I'm guessing after seeing your output over the last month or so, you may not be able to cook small amounts of food.
I raise my kids, cook and golf.  When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.

  • Sorry, misread. The medium is great but the double large or more is your best bet.

I just want it to be mobile if needed. Probably keep it in a nest with wheels like @Caliking. I'll need it in Salado. ..@Mickey won't let me use the demo eggs.

The place is called Werner' Trading Post. Owners name is Rob Werner. That's who you'll want to talk to if you call them. I spend waaaayyyy to much money in that place. They have a little bit of everything. I'll be glad to help you all I can if you decide to buy from him. They have a website but it's not very good.

  • There was a guy a few years back that made a trailer hitch assembly for a large. It had a winch to raise it.

  • I was going to get a medium but found a great deal on a large a few years ago. 569.00. Brand new. So glad I got the large. I think the medium would have been a little tight for me. I say either get a second large or get a mini.

The mini is just too small for me. I'm leaning towards the medium. @Mickey and I rolled LG eggs up a ramp onto his truck. Ok, he watched me roll...."bad back"

They are a mom n pops place here in town. They carry a lot of stuff that you can't get anywhere else and they do a ton of business.

If you consider the medium to be portable, then you'll do just fine if you add the big wheel mod.
