To each his own, but the only size I don't have since I don't need the capacity is the XL. Otherwise my small is my go to egg for 60% of my cooks for the two of us! my large gets like 35% and my medium is my baking egg. In the 12 years since I bought it (medium) brand new it has never had meat in it, nor wood for smoking and still is just tan inside and even still on the original gray felt gasket! My mini is...well...it's still my travel egg so it doesn't get much regular use.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

I think the large is the perfect size. To be honest, I would rarely use two eggs. I think I'd rather accessorize the one I have than spend money on a second one. I really don't have a need or desire to transport one of these. If I did, I might get a mini.Dave - Austin, TX

Yeah...Gerst is good. Calfkiller out of Sparta is good. I'll bring some to you when I get the egg.Green egg, dead animal and alcohol. The "Boro".. TN

Liking my small and XL combo shocked at how little lump goes in the small! To me the small is on the edge of portable and I'm 6.4ft and 320lbs moving stuff isn't generally an issue.Lynnwood WA

I agree the small is a pain to use the ash tool on but to me that is the only down fall to the small. Once I got use to it I can hit 650 really easy. Like Ron said it sees about 90% of my cooks. It is awesome for spatchcock , chuckie or just the quick weeknight meal. Tony those prices seem pretty high. I paid $499 back in the summer for the small, nest and side tables. The average cost for that package around here is about $560 without the side table.-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Tony, its a toss up. I use the large most often, the mini next and the small every so often. If its a small amount of cooking and low and slow, the small is best. I don't trust the mini to last that long. Nor is there any meaningful room for an indirect on the mini. (I know, the diehards will say nay) Mini shines in direct quick and small portions.
IMHO, if you are going with Medium, just go with another Large. But there is a place for the small.

First a Egg was a Small but after getting a Large just never used it so sold it. This works:
Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd. -

Thanks for the agreeing post about the small. BTW here is a small ash removal tool I made from a 1.75" x .75" piece of brass, pop riveted to a piece of strap steel with a simple 90 degree bend. I can clean that ash out of my small in a jiffy!Mattman3969 said:I agree the small is a pain to use the ash tool on but to me that is the only down fall to the small. @Mattman3969 : I made some minor changes to the small ash tool, and it works much better now. It used to catch on the lip of the intake vent all the time and was very annoying. It is much smoother now.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

We have a large, small and mini. The small and the mini has to be cleaned out more than the large but, since I am vertically challenged (LS edged me out by a nose :-))I find the large a PIA to clean.
Seriously, if weight no object, I would get a medium then contact Tom at CGS and have him custom fabricate what you want.
A medium dedicated to baking is on my retirement wish list.Large, small and mini now Egging in Rowlett Tx -

Agreed! You may just get the deal of a lifetime.

+1 on the small. Gets a lot of action when the large isn't lit. Wish the bottom vent was lil bigger.

To me, the driving factor was portability, so the 2nd egg was a small so I could load it myself in the back of the Suburban. I wanted it for tailgating, and found I also use it for: cooks at local egg store if they don't have enough eggs to cook on, took to GaMtn eggfest to have to finish up overnight pork shoulder for sandwiches when switching to the provided large for other cooks, and then I use at home when need to be doing an appetizer or something on small when some other food on the large. For example, right now doing ABT's on small and pork tenderloin on large to take to family gathering today.
If I did not need portability, I would have gone with 2nd large--everything fits both, they come up to temp faster than small, but I had to have portability so small won out (mini too small for our tailgate crowd).
