Favorite Lump Charcoal?
I am in SC and have tried a few different kinds of lump but my favorite so far is Tru Que Lump. I always just tend to pick up a few bags whenever I go to Lowes or Home Depot. Have tried Cowboy but there tends to be a lot of fine charcoal in there and I prefer decent sized chunks as they tend to get better airflow and resulting heat stability. I haven't tried the BGE brand but open to suggestions. What is your favorite?

By the way I am a newbie. Don't judge me for my unsophisticated lump choices!

You will find as many opinions as brands of lump. My favorites are Rockwood, Ozark Oak, and Dragon Breath. You can read all the reviews on the Naked Whiz site.

I use Royal Oak I found that to me it's just as good as BGE lump that cost me like $27.99 for a large bag the Royal Oak I buy on sale for $9.99 for a 17.6 lb bag and it works as good as BGE lump2 Large Eggs and a Mini 2 Pit Bulls and a Pork shoulder or butt nearby and 100% SICILIANLong Island N.Y.

There may be enough eggers in your area to do a pallet buy.

If you're in Columbia, SC, there are three pallets of Rockwood arriving today for a group buy. Send me your email address and I'll forward it to the organizer.

You're right with being similar. Royal Oak bags Big Green lump. The extra $$$ is for the bag to say Big Green EggCharlesmaneri said:I use Royal Oak I found that to me it's just as good as BGE lump that cost me like $27.99 for a large bag the Royal Oak I buy on sale for $9.99 for a 17.6 lb bag and it works as good as BGE lump

@Tailwind-welcome aboard. Here's a link to the above mentioned site that has lump reviews and is a great ceramic cooker reference. http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramic.htm Give it a good look as most of your initial questions can probably be answered there.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

In the middle of my first 20 lbs. of Ozark Oak right now and it has been excellent. While really any lump will suffice, there is a noticeable difference I've noticed with OO primarily with the lack of white smoke or burn off at the outset. Easy to light and get to temp and holds temp really well through the cook. When I got the Egg, I just assumed all lump was pretty much the same. OO has changed my mind.
Also got in on the local group buy of Rockwood thanks to the efforts of @Proser. Haven't opened a bag yet, but looking forward to trying that as well.

Like many here I try to always cook with an Oak lump charcoal. There are several and I really don't see much difference in them all.

ozark oak, rockwood, wicked good before the had supply issues.Currently using fogo from amazon which I am happy with also.

I am admitted relative Noobie, only having my Lg since July...Having said that, I have used Cowboy, hated it, like many others for too many small bits and pieces. Also used the BGE brand....great quality, large pieces, but costly. Currently using Royal Oak, which I can get at Walmart...8.8lbs for about $7.00...reasonably sized, great burn time, not much ash.
To those more experienced than me, I hear about these larger bags (17 lbs) of Royal Oak - where are we getting those???? Wally-world only carries the 8.8 LB!!!

-
Rockwood is my brand of choice. I really like Ozark Oak as we'll but find the Rockwood to be more neutral in flavor.XL BGE
