How do I re-season cast iron in the egg?

Anyone know how to strip the seasoning off cast iron so as to apply new seasoning?  I'd like to do it in the egg.  I was thinking just put the cast iron in, and open all the vents until the charcoal burns out.  Does that sound about right?  With all the vents open, how long do you think it would take to strip the seasoning?

i have a pan thats seen some really high heats and its now warped. if you google stripping cast iron you will see some threads about oven cleaner and vinegar, probably a better route to go. if your just reseasoning, scrape off the loose stuff, 350/400 ,apply a light coat peanut oil or lard one hour in egg, reoil and flip upsidedown in egg and close the vents

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • DO NOT over heat your cast iron! Fishlessman already has stated that his warped...It can also crack!

Why do you need to strip it??  Old, well seasoned is good!!

One of the best cast pans I have came from Grandmother and I'm pretty darn sure it has been seasong for about 100 years now and has never been striped clean.

I have re seasoned over a dozen pieces of griswold and Wagner items in the egg. I've tried the oven cleaner method too, but nothing works better than high heat Imo. I've yet to have a piece warp or crack on me, but I've heard of it happening to others. I think the key is bringing it up to temp gradually and letting it cool gradually. Last piece I did a couple weeks ago I threw it in the egg after one of my cooks, around 300, then let it climb to 700 and let it burn for an hour and start bringing the egg back down and shut it down or until the lump starts dying , let it cool completely before taking it out.

Oh, the above is for striping the old stuff off. After that I scrub with hot soapy water to clean everything off, throw it in a warm oven for a half hour to dry it completely. I've been using the egg to season it too since the oven really stinks up the house.

That's a sweet hand-me-down! I'm not so luck since mine come all gunky and rusty from thrift stores usually.
