Gotta Be The Bands Right?

Got to be the bands right? I haven't found any cracks on the new base. Will check the firebox in the AM to see if that crack has expanded. Luckily I picked up the wArranty firebox today.
Here is a pic of the dome Thermo seconds after I heard the noise again...
Never went above 650 with this new base and the new gaskets

I thought that pop was the opening of another Glenfiddich bottle...Green egg, dead animal and alcohol. The "Boro".. TN

LOL... Not exactly the reassurance I was looking for in this instance.henapple said:I thought that pop was the opening of another Glenfiddich bottle...

I hope it's your fire box. I can't see the band's making the noise or it would be pretty common.
What style is your old fire box? Does it have the vertical slot?
I'll drink to your egg tonight good sir.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++Austin, Texas. I'm the guy holding a beer. -
The old fire box is only about a year and half old; does have the vertical cut in it from the factory. Figure it's the bands contracting as it only happens at the low end of the cool down from the higher temps... They were tightened up pretty good during the new base install...sumoconnell said:I hope it's your fire box. I can't see the band's making the noise or it would be pretty common.

When my large cracked l heard a loud pop which I tried to ignore then another load pop and then I shut it down. The next day the fire ring was split in 2 and the base was cracked.

So you heard the noises at higher temps correct? Then u shut it down? I'm hearing these noises after the egg has cooled down to 100 or less...Lit said:When my large cracked l heard a loud pop which I tried to ignore then another load pop and then I shut it down. So far so good... Have to see when I get it ready for cooking today.MSV Chill Spot

Perhaps your bands are too tight? Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the proper torque spec in the manual for the bands is 135 inch pounds. You could grab a torque wrench and see if it goes away.
-
My vote is it has to be your bands or some price of metal in the egg (ar or something), bands popping, settling.
I don't see how it could be the ceramics routinely popping, one pop maybe an then there would be a crack or break. They can't just pop around and not show something._______________________________________________XLBGE -
I'd loosen everything, big band bolts and the hinge bolts. Then make sure the band bolts are in the right place and tighten them back. Then tighten the hinge to the bands.
More than likely the metal is expanding and then on cool down either the hinge pops to to slide back to spot on band, or the bands pop to slide back over lip of egg.
If it was just one pop I'd believe ceramics, but a routine pop would be slipping metal. Unless you have 3 cracks :-bd_______________________________________________XLBGE -
Will the metal is expanding there would be no pop, just loosening, the pop is the force contracting.
Ha sorry to ramble. I've been up all night, delusional and tired driving home.
Good luck!_______________________________________________XLBGE -
Thanks guys... If there are no cracks; I'm not going to worry too much about it. Rather the stuff be a little snug than have the dome fall off... (Knocks on wood)
My dealer is pretty good. If there needs to be any adjustments I'm sure he'd take care of it.MSV Chill Spot

If I am remembering correctly your egg sits on a wood deck with a wood partition - could it possibly be the wood contracting from the heat of the egg?Every day is a bonus day and every meal is a banquet in Winter Springs, Fl !

Maybe try taking the bands back off and reassembling it. There could be something wedged between.Dunedin, FL

I've heard the snap on cool down on one of my larges a couple of times. Will do a thorough inspection later and let you know what I find. So far I'm with the bands.

Think this maybe the culprit. The crack has gotten bigger since the last time I checked when the base was swapped out. Good thing I have the back up in the garage already... Didn't notice anything else when I had it empty cleaning it out.MSV Chill Spot

That box should have another couple hundred cooks left in it. Having a back up is nice.

@hapster - Why not throw the new firebox in and try to recreate the conditions when you heard the popping. If you get nothing, you know it's the firebox.

Sorry to see that man. Took both my larges apart and only crack is on the grate of my 4 yr. old egg. Just a wee one from the edge to an outer hole. Most likely from bourbon clumsiness than heat! Keep cooking till the cracked goes south. Annuthren' awaits.

My large has done that since day one. I've also had a firebox do that same thing and it was just replaced and it still made the noises the first time I cooked with it. It's definitely the bands or hinge. I have had mine apart a couple times for gasket replacement and adjusting the dome, used a torque wrench and all to tighten it back up. I think it's just the environment

Leaning more and more to this as the cause of the noises. Heard them tonight after on going to 350 dome. With the new base and gasket, my egg now has about a 3/8" underbite. Likely metal contracting...jetmech said:My large has done that since day one.
