Well, my order arrived this morning.  Opened up one of the bags and pleasantly surprised.  Looked pretty good size wise

Dumped it out and did a real quick sort.  That's an iPhone 5 for size perspective.  While there were no huge pieces (Which to me is good), there were a lot of good sized medium pieces, and about 50% usable small.  Not a whole lot of chips or dust.  Overall, a good bag.  We'll see how it burns in the next day or so.

For all who have opened a box of Forestlumps charcoal this is what you should expect.
For all of those who have gotten an unsatisfactory box of Forestlumps charcoal contact support@forestlumps.com

And thank you Tjcoley for posting such great HD images.

Just received my 4 boxes.  FedEx beat them up pretty bad.  Opened one bag and poured it out into a flat box to get a look at the contents.  Unlike the Naked Whiz review, no large pieces, about 25% medium, 50% small and 25% chips and dust.  I just loaded my XLs with Rockwood yesterday so I won't be able to review how it performs until mid next week.  I'm guessing that a pallet buy would reduce the amount of small chips and dust due to the FedEx shipping.
Sir, Our assurance is given that we sort sizes  (20/50/30 : Sm/Med/Lg). Law Of Averages dictates that some times we miss our challenge. We sort all small batches to be free of foreign mater and to have no un-carbonized  wood during the same process we attempt to provide the proper size mix. Our packing line is manned by four (4) men and has proven to be  very successful and accurate. We sift all fines less than a 0.5" ; all of this is done by manual labor to assure our consumers that we TRY to deliver the best Hardwood Lump Charcoal.
This is why we box our product. BUT even boxing it, may not protect if enough concerning shipping and handling by third parties.
Any Customer CLAIMS of substandard product will be taken seriously by support@forestlumps.com; for Refunds or Product Replacement please contact us and submit an image. Thank you!
I'm not complaining, just reviewing the 1st bag of the 1st box I opened.  I'm not blaming you for fedex handling.  To be fair, I just opened the second bag of the first box and it has some large pieces and looks better.  I'll have a better update later.

    Here's what I got:

The knife is a 3", (6" overall) blade.  One box awful, one box was much better.

  • I am the proprietor of Forestlumps. I'm just a good'ole boy from the south. A coon-ass from birth with ties to the old country. Small batch kilns and premium feedstock makes for the best flavors in Hardwood Lump. I try hard to bring this lump over from the Western Balkans, across the Adriatic Sea then the Mediterranean Sea, then across the Atlantic Ocean to the Eastern Seaboard of the USA. I pack it in the Balkans, sifting and sorting and then boxing it to protect this fragile product. I bend over backwards trying to make a fair trade with low profit to establish this brand. This is putting the "Water in Front of the Horse; SOME JUST WON't DRINK". Maybe I should have put some sugar in it.

  • And just to followup what Forestlumps said, in our review, we pointed out that the boxes we got were only a little over 19 pounds.   Although this met the advertised weight of 20 pounds plus/minus 5%, we suggested that people probably expect 20 pounds.  We were told by Forestlumps at that time that they were going to have to change to larger boxes in order to get 20 pounds into them.  I assume this is precisely what they are doing.

Anymore comments on the ForestLump stuff after using it a few times?  There distro spot is in Tampa and is a short drive from my home.  I'm almost out of my ACE delivered big buy of WGWW lump and am thinking of splitting a pallet or just getting 10-15 of my own.

    I appreciate any comments

I bought 3 boxes, but I've only opened one.  I picked up mine as I live in the Tampa area, so there was no shipping. The pieces were medium in size.  I'll post some follow up after I've gone through a few cooks.

I've burned through three boxes. All three had decent size pieces. The second box seemed to take longer to burn off the VOC's and get rid of the acrid smell, but otherwise I'm happy with it.

I guess one man's acrid smell is another's beechwood smoke.  I've burned 3 bags and I can't say that I've ever smelled anything I would have called acrid.

Interested in hearing what you guys think. I didn't realize they were in Tampa. I'm just across the bay and I only have 2 bags of WGWW left.

My first half box was smaller pieces but the second half had more medium sized pieces so I'm ok with that.  I've done 5 cooks with it so far and haven't had any problem with VOCs.  It comes up to temp fairly quickly and imparts a very mild smoke flavor.  Over all it seems to work fine although I prefer Rockwood, Ozark Oak, and Dragon Breath better.  If you can get it cheap, I think you will be happy with it.

I actually enjoyed the smell of the lump when burning, but didn't enjoy all the small pieces ( from shipping).

  • I ordered 5 boxes and have opened three boxes and three bags.  While the pieces are mostly medium and small, my cooks has been good and I've enjoyed the results.  I guess for me each bag of lump I try (RO, BGE, KJ, WGC, CB) is different and hopefully enjoyable.  Like craft beers, I hope to try others and understand some will be better depending on the day and my given taste or mood.  Each of the char I mentioned have had less then stellar bags and I knew what I was getting ordering this lump.  Same goes for beers, some times it warm and flat.

Overall ForestLumps was a good buy for me this time and it was good to give it a try.  I'll order again as they ship and it not something I can buy locally.  Fire sale, re-brand, whatever, they earned my repeat business for what its worth to others.

I spoke w Marko yesterday and he seems like a great guy w a good product.  I'm very interested in grabbing some.  I'd love to split a pallet if someone or multiple people would split it w me.  We do need to go pick it up but I could handle picking up my part of the split.

They are just north of the Tampa airport and address is 4929 Tampa West Blvd
