I bought my 1st BGE today. WooHoo. Elliotts Hardware in Plano has a package deal for a large egg, table, platesetter, bag of ozark oak, pack of starters, ash tool and grill removal tool. I couldn't be happier. It's scheduled to be delivered this coming Friday and I can hardly wait. I might just have to pick up one of those cryovac packer briskets (certified angus select according to the stamps on the cryovac) for $1.79 a pound. I'm sure 7 days of aging in the fridge would do nothing but help.

Congrats, Elliot's has a nice selection of BGEs. Where did you see the brisket? I recently tried a select from Walmart and a choice from Costco. Both turned out good. I'm really digging burnt ends. Enjoy!

Elliott's is great I usually stop off there when I am up in the Plano area. You should go back now and stock up on the great Dizzy Pig selection they have.

I would try and find a choice packer, it's a better quality of meat, and for your first impression you will want that. a select packet can be good, but itisn't as likely as a choice brisket.

personally, I would recommend a pork butt first, they're really easy to nail.

BYS1981, I took your advice and picked up a USDA choice packer for $2.29 / lbs. A little more expensive than the $1.79 select but hopefully the extra $6 will be worth it.

$1349 for the package. Considering that was less than the retail cost of the Large Egg and the official BGE long table which are included in the package along with the platesetter, ash tool, grate tool and charcoal and I was planning on buying all those things anyway it seemed like a good deal to me.

I would do a pork butt first. Really hard to screw that up. Would hate for your first cook to not turn out great.

I plan on doing a pork butt, but being a life-long Texan there's just a natural draw to brisket. And don't worry - I won't feel bad if I screw it up...in fact I'm expecting that.
