Hi Folks,
Been lurking here forever but have been smoking and grilling since 2004 when I bought a large egg.
Bought a mini a year later for quick steaks,/burgers dogs etc. They both make home on a nice Ipe table I made when I purchased everything.
Igrill will be arriving any day now as a new toy.
I have had a BBQ guru "competitor" since 2005 and it is still used today for those low/slow butt smokes. It works great but am wondering if the newer models have anything I may be missing.
Talk later,
John

John, if you visit my web page (www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramic.htm) and go to the product review section, I have detailed reviews of all the major temperature controllers. I list the features on each model up at the front. If your Competitor is working fine, you probably aren't missing any of the new features unless you want to step up to controlling 2 cookers at once or Wifi.

I bought a guru about 8 months ago and its basically does three things. Monitors pit temp, and food temp, while the fan keeps the pit temp where you want it. There are all kinds of alarms you can set on it to alert you when the temp gets to low or two high, but other than that there aren't any other features.

Well, there is Open Lid Detect. Ramp mode was available back in '04, so that isn't new. Adaptive control is new since '04, I believe. And the probe wires are now armored instead of the brown teflon wires of old.
