MY DOME WON'T CLOSE!!!

I was cooking dinner and when I opened it to check if things were done I couldn't get the dome to shut. I have a XLBGE. Anyone else have this problem before? I took all the charcoal out and put it in my fire pit. I'm waiting on it to cool down right now.

  • yep. look at your bands. They are slipping and need to be adjusted. Wait until it cools then loosen the bolts on the back, push your bands all the way up/down on the dome/base and retighten. Should fix you right up. Very common, especially with newer eggs. mine's done it 3x in 8 years

If you don't have good light or the egg is too hot, you can do it tomorrow. No biggie. It's like a 5-10 minute deal max

+1 on that advice. The last thing you want to do is drop the done and damage it because you can't see.

I have enough light. It shouldn't take too much longer to cool down since I emptied it out. It's been sitting for a while now. Went ahead and ate while the food was hot before I posted anything.

Just to clarify. I should loosen the one bolt on the back that tightens the band around the dome?

Yes. The bottom and push the band all the way down and re tighten. Then the top if need be.

  • might be good to have a partner out there to help you support the dome in case you loosen a little too much :-SS

  • youshould be able to do it with the dome down, but it you open it for any reason. make sure you have it tightened enough to hold it

Is your dome open or just won't shut completely? If open, have the Mrs. loosen and you hold the dome. A busted dome is not fun, trust me.

Open. I'm not going to worry about it tonight. The Mrs. is already in bed. I'll take care of it after work tomorrow. I started drinking by the unplanned fire in the fire pit. The steak and salmon turned out great. Luckily they were done when I checked on them and couldn't get the dome closed again. No pics since I was too worried about the egg.
