BBQ pitmasters my home town!

So was catching up on some BBQ pitmasters I had DVR'd. One I saw last night was tri tip and brisket. It was in tupelo ms which is an hour away where my dad is from and grandparents live! And then one of the guys on it was from columbus. My home town. Hanks bbq. They showed his bbq shack and some pictures of the town while he was doing the intro. Was pretty cool seeing someone I know on it.

When the intro plays, he is the guy in the blue shirt that says "if it was easy then everyone would do it"

What's your review? Is his joint Pitmaster worthy?

it's the best BBQ in town, if that is saying much.  I think differently about food since my egg.  If I want BBQ or ribs, I'm make it myself, but we order from him a lot for work and it never disappoints.

I totally agree. Feel the same way about a local place here.

I have seen  a few episodes, and do not really like the show.  The one i watched  most recently had fresh ham and beef ribs as the meat.  One of the competitors had never done beef ribs before and two of them have never done fresh hams before.  How do you get on a show called BBQ Pitmasters with such limited experience.  It is not like the show select some super exotic meat.  I have been barbaqueing for about a year on my BGE and have done a larger variety of meats then these people.

Well I do agree it is funny to see these guys open things and never have seen or cook'd them. The majority of contestants are tried and true circuit cooks or long time resteraunt guys and gals. They have won 100+ grand in competition or cook 100 racks a ribs a week. Watching them struggle with a tri tip can be amusing, but I can't compare to some of their experiences. There are a lot of first timers popping on there as well. I find the show very interesting.

The other day Johnny trigs got pork belly and was totally confused. But I think the fella knows what he's doing.

That show has really been an education for me as to how much work most other types of cookers are. Much more than I would be willing to do. They don't leave those things alone for more than 5 minutes. That one where you only cook with hot ash (no live fire) is crazy. Non stop carrying ash in a shovel from a huge chimney to the pit. Over and over again. How could that be enjoyable?

I agree that the show is educational but also wonder how some of the contestants get on there. One guy with crazy hair turned in spare ribs and burnt ends that were horrible! Makes you wonder if the show puts more value in personality than experience. Whatever it takes to boost ratings...

That guy was terrible. I'm sure you have to add something every now and then. I liked the ones when they were on the circuit. The ones where it's three cooks are good too. I don't really like the ones with 4 cooks, were they give them challenges. It's the ones with warren sapp

I really liked the first season of the show, when it was the actual competition and not a side deal completely separate. That is where I first learned of the BBQ Guru that Slap Yo Daddy BBQ was using (who I saw a couple years ago in California and got to try some of his food and it was great). I bought one without a controller to try and keep temp in a cheap box smoker and it did work fine in the summer, but in the fall or on a windy day forget about it. The Warren Sapp season was hard to watch for me, I have only seen a few this season and they are getting closer to the first season but you can tell it is somewhat scripted but entertaining to watch.

Thats cool your local place was on there.

I made it my mission to hit up restaurants that were featured on tv while I was traveling for work a couple years ago. 51 DDD 11 man vs food and countless others that I have seen on travel channel or food network it made being gone much more tolerable but if I had to do it again I would probably keep a mini egg in my trunk and cook most nights.

Thats awesome @JRWhitee I have family in that area and want to go there when I visit next! I tell my friends most people watch that show and I lived that show. My friends always ask me where to eat when they travel.

Have you been to Smalley's Carribean Barbecue yet? That looked like a cool place.

@JRWhitee I really enjoyed Gaffey Street Diner, I got the roasted turkey club and it was one of the best sandwiches i've ever had. I went to almost all the ones in So Cal as I spent more time there than anything.

Sorry to hijack your thread MrCookingNurse I can start my own if you would rather.
