98 out of 100 egg'ers are going to recommend one of these. Pretty, aren't they?Packerland, Wisconsin

Ha ha it looks like I'm going with a thermapen. Thanks everyone

I got one back in September after reading a post like this one, I also use it to check water for tea and see the temp of oil when frying. They really are the fastest instant thermometers out there. Plus everyone here obviously likes them. Green means go (they are a little bit faster than the others)Large & Small BGE, CGW Two-Tier Swing Rack for BOTH EGGS, Spider for the Wok, eggCARTen & and Cedar Pergola my Eggs call home in Edmond, OK.

I had a one, then one day it was gone, I couldn't find it for the life of me. I searched all over the kitchen, in all my pockets (pants, shorts, jackets) nothing. So I ordered a new one with, this time with the "jacket" with magnets so I could keep it on the fridge. Then a couple weeks ago I was making some additions to my 3-tier all-grain home brew rig, I opened my brew box and WTF there is was in the tray with my stainless steel fittings. I must have used it when I brewed my last batch and forgot about it.Now I have 2!

I use mine for brewing also, between cooking and brewing I think I need an extra one...err...backup!

No not 100 out of 100, there is always one oddball in the bunch and in this case that would be me. First off let me just say that the Thermopen is a great thermometer. I have nothing against it. For me I use a Bonjour LaserProbe combination infrared and instant read thermometer that I got about five years ago now. It is no longer made, but it features an infrared sensor that you can use to shoot the surface temperature of pans or griddle grills either on the stove or out at the grill. These days I use it sometimes to shoot the temperature of my wok before I get started. The direct probe folds out and give you a reading that is 90% accurate within one second. The final reading is said to be accurate to within plus or minus 1.4%. This thermometer is great for taking quick ballpark readings when you're out in the cold and want to see where things are at. You can keep the lid open a very short period of time. I really bought it for the quick instant read features, but I find I use the infrared capabilities as much if not more often.
