Putting a cast iron dutch oven directly on plate setter?

New egg owner and learning on the fly...the best way!

Probably an elementary question to you guys, but is there any harm in putting a cast iron dutch oven (or any cast iron) directly on the plate setter? I do not see why there would be, but thought I would check in with the experts!



  • I like to put spacers between the DO and the plate setter. Helps prevent scorching. If the DO has little legs it accomplishes the same thing.

    BBQ hippie is right, Definetly want some spacers in between the plate setter and DO.

    I usually put my dutch oven directly on the plate setter legs up.

    I use mine with spacers. I use some 3/4" copper tees that you would use for plumbing. Saw the idea here and they work fantastic.

    Sounds like the spacers are a good idea.  However, I have made baked beans for years with the Lodge DO sitting right on the platesetter and the results have been excellent.

    Perhaps rolled up balls of tinfoil or the BGE ceramic legs (if you have them).

    I cut some pieces of 1" square tubing about  2" long but I've also put it right on the Platesetter.

    I use these little things (Ceramic Briquettes), they're made for putting in a gasser to help keep flame ups to a minimum.

  • I dismembered an old toaster oven and rescued the S-shaped ceramic pieces that hed the heating element in place.  I use these as spacers.  About 1/4 inch thick, and i have 6 of them.  Works great, and the ceramic will never oxidize and isn't plated with anything.  Even clean-burn them with the rest of the egg.

    Thanks again everyone. Great replies! Being that I needed something last night I made small tinfoil squares and put them on the place setter. Will be looking for an alternative, but that worked great for what I needed (maybe I will just keep using those).

    or you can leave the platesetter out of the egg and just put the dutch on the grill, no need to complicate things
  • My cast iron dutch oven has legs on it. (Lodge)  I have always cooked stews, beans etc.  Never had a problem.

    I use the platesetter legs up, and then put the grid on the plate setter.  DO goes on top of the grid.
