Just bought a green egg. Accessory advice??

I bought a large green egg that I will keep on a wood deck. I bought a plate setter and that is it so far. I will not be baking any pies on the Egg, primarily be used for smoking pork/chicken and grilling steaks. Opinions on other accessories I should get and best place to get them (or just buy them at Green Egg dealer)?
Also, since it will be on a wood deck and I will do overnight cooks, I will probably get something to put under the Egg to catch any ash that gets out. Recommendations?
Also, for a cover, should I just get the Green Egg cover or is there something cheaper that will do the job?
Thanks in advance

get a Thermo pen instant read thermometer, a remote read such as a Maverick ET732 is nice to have but not necessary .Ova B.

A Thermopen is a must.I'd also recommend an Adjustable Rig from Ceramic Grill Storeand a Spider and Wok.Oh, lump charcoal would be nice also.__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious

You'll eventually want a table for your egg, I suspect. Definitely keep looking through this forum at what other people are doing. I would suggest some form of temperature measuring. I have the MaverickIf you're doing low/slow cooks, this thing is great. Do some cooks and read the forum and see what others are doing, you'll come across items and realize those would make your cooks easier and more efficient. Welcome aboard, you'll soon fall in love with your BGE.

Welcome. Get ready for information overload. You are off to a good start, usually the dealers will give you a setter at half price, it is a great thing to have in your "quiver" of set-ups. The AR is good, works very well, at $150 for the large, you will have to determine if that is in your egg budget. I'd suggest like many above, get a Thermapen ($90) and a Maverick 732 ($60).The Mav is ideal for low and slows, the Thermapen for accurate temps, low and slow or grilling.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

OK, you have a plate setter and a thermopen, those are gotta haves. You are going to need find a way to raise your grid and there are a lot of options. I went out and bought some things I thought I was going to need and realized I really didn't need them like beer can chicken stands...don't need them once you've tried spatchcock. I also bought a salt block that I won't use any more. Best advice is go slow and you will figure out what you need and want.

Agree with Burr...take it slow and work around what you don't need so you can get what you want.Green egg, dead animal and alcohol. The "Boro".. TN

Cast iron grate for those steaks.

The only cover ya need is a umbrella in case it's raining so you don't get water in your beer

I have had my egg about 6 months now. I bought a place setter and an ash tool when I got my egg. I worried about what eggccessories I would need but quickly realized that there is so much to cook with just the stock setup and the place setter that I put getting any other eggccessories on hold. I did break down and get a pizza stone. I used it one time with great results but we just don't eat that much pizza.
You might want to get a couple of fire bricks to use raise the grate for raised direct cooks.
Just start cooking and at some point you will know what you want.

You have a thermapen and a maverick coming shortly.
This is all you need to get started. I would get some cooks under your belt and see what your personal needs are.

I would pick up some split firebricks and a big box store round grid that will fit inside the dome. That will allow you to do most cooks with what you already have and will cost almost nothing.

I am retired and I have lots of time to make my own custom eggsessories. It's fun and maybe I will hit on something to make and sell.Simple ingredients, amazing results!
-
Sam.....what are you making?
-
@SamFerrise and @rustypotts there are lots of things to make, and as Sam says, if you have the time it is fun. My dealer wanted $15 for an ash tool, not that it is not a thing of beauty, but I just don't like paying far more than what I think it is worth. Came home took some 3/4" corner bead, bent it in the vise, taped on a handle and voila, great ash tool. Same thing for a wiggle rod, one bent coat hanger, same handle and away we go.Channel lock pliers (often called water pump pliers) are the best grid lifter for the SS grids, not so good for CI grid. Have a basic tool for lifting out my setter when it is hot, needs work to improve. No intention to sell anything, just to share the idea.@bezdecr - if you plan to low and slow overnight, get a stoker. The Mav will work, sometimes too well. The alarms will wake you too often during the night on one cook, while on another cook, it lets you sleep. Too much luck on the set-up. A stoker turns the egg into an oven, just sits and does its job and you will sleep like a baby.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

My favorite accessory is also the most expensive: meat. But I can't imagine owning my Egg without. Best accessory I have bought but problem is it keeps disappearing so gotta keep buying more.Boom
