Cleaning Egg Shelves. Any suggestions?

I bought the plastic Egg shelves for my Large. I ASSumed they would be easier to clean than the wooden Egg Mate versions. The plastic is not very smooth and has a slightly rough finish on it, almost like a non-slip finish. Up until now it has not been the easiest thing to keep clean. Food wants to really stick to it. Saturday a gust of wind blew some charcoal dust out of the bag of lump I was pouring into my Egg and it landed on one of the Egg Shelves. I can't get it all off of the shelf. I have a 6" faint but darker grey area where the charcoal dust landed. I have an orange citrus based grill spray that has cleaned up anything I've ever thrown at up until now. Even this doesn't work.

What do you guys use to clean the plastic Egg Shelves? Thanks in advance.

Here is a post on how one member cleaned the wooden mates of coal dust, might be worth a try.

Otherwise, you could try a diluted bleach solution.

Thanks I shall certainly give that a try. One of my worries is where my shelves are a plastic resin, they might be "more sensitive". I think anything I try, I will run a test on the underside of the shelf first.

Eggcelsior The plastic helps clean the coon outta the blades so the dakkeries doen have so much hair in em.

With a scrub brush, use Bon Ami or Bartender's Friend, two "no-abrasive" scouring powders. They work wonders on all sorts of things.

+1 on Bar Keeper's Friend. I use that stuff like Frank's RedHot Sauce.

Oxalic acid is awesome! Watch out when it starts hanging out with Calcium and not with Hydrogen. The results can be very painful.

I thought you'd go further with the chemicals. I know we got some stuff in our lab that will strip anything right off...might not be much left of the plastic shelves, though.

I'm not big on plastic around my cooking area. One thought is to change the tops to cypress, ipe or some other durable wood with spar varnish. Having stainless cut is another option.

Hahah....yeah, that would have been fun. Methylene Chloride, sulfuric acid, all the way to trinitrotoluene.

Those plastic wings are terrific on the small when cooking away from home. I haven't had charcoal dust get on them yet, but it's only a matter of time. Let us know what works. I'm thinking the alcohol or 409.

The best luck I had was with car wash soap. and a green scouring pad

I thought the composite would be easier to maintain - especially long term versus wood - but I think for everyday clean the wood would be better and so what if every year I'd need to water seal the wood. I could spend a significant amount of time trying to keep the comp. clean and at this point I'm "living with" a certain amount of not clean.
