Bit by the Egg! No Response for BGE!!

  • I would call BGE anyway. It's still the fastest way to get help from BGE. I haven't had the same issue on the Big Joe at all. The design of the draft door is much different than the the Egg. The spark arrester slides on it's own track inside vent. No sharps edges to be found. The draft door is folded everywhere a sharp edge could've been a issue. My Freinds XL has the same issue. He took his vent off and cleaned up any sharp edges. BGE Canada did not consider it a warranty issue. Hopefully your luck is better with the mother ship in the US.

This thing goes to every BBQ site bashing the BGE and worshipping the Joe. Doesn't the Red Joe have their own site or does this thing have nothing better to do than to bash the BGE because of his own insecurities. Sad thing is, he is now a well known Egg basher that he is being called out everywhere he goes. Obvious dude.
  • Is salty dog just rub my rock?
    Boom
  • I just spoke with BGE and they recommended similar fixes as were posted yesterday and Saturday (i.e. flat blade to widen the track, take out the screen to make room in the track if not on a wood deck). They also said they are working on a fix for the sharp edge issue. And finally, they offered to send me a new lower vent assembly if the fixes do not work.

    BGE comes through. Case closed.

Thanks for all of the help and from those of you swirling around on what a stupid question this was, thanks for the entertainment.

Maybe you could just sand the edges with some 220 grit sandpaper to dull the edges?

    No, he is nobody.

    Now we have a winner.

This nobody certainly gets people to post about him.  I love being a "nobody."

Keep it up.  I love the attention.  I win.  Winnah, winnah, chicken dinnah!!!

Now jump on the party train, people.

  • I have an XL that was new in June 2012.  I have none of these issues.  The damper gets stopped by the screws before it can expose the end of the screen, and i have no sharp edges at all.  (maybe this is a problem contained to just the large model???)

My vent is hard to slide open as well.  Is this the same vent as yours?

    image
My vent looks different than this.  The solid door should be on the outside like in this pic, however, the handle for the solid door should be on the left side and should clip into the handle for the screen when shut all the way.  Not on the right side like in the pic above.

    Hope this helps.

  • My new (bought in July) Egg lower vent cover assembly is awfully flimsy for such a high end cooking device. It does not operate smoothly - it slides hard - and the vent cover slides so far to the right that it totally uncovers the screen portion of the vent cover assembly and then catches on the screen portion when I try to close it.

I was willing to live with this because functionally the egg works great in every other way, that is until last weekend.

I sliced open my index finger on the bottom right lip of the track while sliding the vent cover closed.

I have written to BGE Customer Service twice now and they refuse to respond. This is unlike my previous experiences with BGE customer service...

Compared to older models I have seen, it appears BGE has cheapened up the vent cover assembly significantly and I am extremely dissatisfied with the quality of this part of my Big Green Egg.

Am I crazy or has anyone else out there had a similar problem?  Is my Egg simply defective? Please let me know what you can.

    Thanks,

I think you have a very legitimate point and have notice the shape edges around the vent area myself.  If you don't get a response from the manufactures in a reasonable amount of time, I would encourage you to have your lawyer write the company.  I think this will get them off dead center.

So the problem here is that people have their vent is installed wrong? Both my LBGE vents look like the picture and I never had a problem. I am having a hard time seeing where someone would cut them self . The picture above is how the vent should look.

Weird. Mine was installed by the dealer and does not look like that. My grate is outside, solid piece inside. Which works perfectly for me and I'm not changing but weird that is came from the dealer wrong.

One of my buddies has his screen on the outside. He fussed and fussed and fussed with me about it being the right way. Only one id ever seen.

The screen on the outside is backwards. Try sliding the solid piece all the way to the right and over the bolts a little bit. Now you should be able to slide the screen under the solid piece, this only works if you are not using the nest which gets in the way. If you are using the nest you may have to get help to spin or lift the egg. Or if what tou have works for you just keep it that way ;)

When I flip my screen my vent won't close, (below).

  • Ok. I'll jump in.

My xl has the solid piece on the outside with the tab on the left. It is extremely difficult to slide. My wife can't budge it at all. It never really bothered me because I only use the bottom vent in three settings, low med and lift off.

If anyone can figure it all out, I'd love to hear it.

Here's how you can cut your finger on a setup like the one pictured above. I know because I've done it. My door is also sticky - I just chalked it up to "that's the way it is."

Take the lower slide on the meshed door and pinch it between your index finger and thumb. Your index finger may rest on the metal lip that holds the two slides in place.

Apply pressure in the direction you want the slide to move. With a sticky door, you will need to apply much more pressure than normal and suddenly the slide will jump to the other end.

It's analogous to opening a beer after fishing it out from under your seat while driving Hwy 53 here in Oregon. All that stored energy has to go somewhere.

I've since altered my method for sliding the vents. I now use the tap method. And a Camelbak for imbibing and driving.

I could see now after looking at it better that if the solid vent had the handle on the left how you could cut yourself. Looking at my own post I can see where people are having a problem. In my opinion this is not a BGE problem unless they are shipping like this from the factory. If you are getting cut or having a problem just set your vent like Smoothsmoke.

Stiffness is another issue. Just pry the channels open a little with a flat screwdriver.

I just spent a few minutes reading through this stupid thread and I'm convinced most of you have nothing better to do than ****, moan and piss at each other.

Sorry you cut your finger. Get a damned file and file down the offending piece of metal!

Personally, I would feel like a damned fool coming on a forum complaining about 'avulsing' my finger on anything.

Most of you have something more important to do I'm sure. Go do it. (I need to find something to do my self)

How many ways can you assemble two sliding parts with a left and right function...that said, LBGE dealer assmbled, screen on the inside, screen tabs to the left, solid plate on the outside-tab on the right.  I have never had an issue with degree of difficulty in sliding either one in each direction.  I do periodically clean out the tracks and spray with cooking oil. I am now jinxed-

I just called and talked to the mother ship. The lower vents should be just like you describe.

I called one time, pressed one button and got a person. The guy was very friendly and helpful.

  • We have been looking at these posts, and felt we should provide some input. Over the years there have been a few random comments now and then from users regarding issues operating the draft door or slider, and we are not sure why there seems to be more at the moment. We constantly evaluate our products to determine if there are any components which would benefit from design modifications, and these comments will be reviewed to see if there is something that needs looking at.

As you know, we're dedicated to the safety and performance of the EGG, and appreciate input from our many satisfied EGGheads. We're confident the EGG is a well engineered and safe product, and we always consider suggestions to make it even better. We did note some posts about the draft door components - if you remove the sliding door and safety screen completely, the correct reassembly order is the sliding screen first, with two tabs facing to your left; then the solid sliding door placed so it sits on top of the screen (not behind it) with the single tab located to your right. The only time the screen itself needs to be opened all the way to the right would be to remove ash. Keep screen in place, all the way to the left, when using the EGG. Always handle everything carefully as the metal tabs and metal screen may have sharp edges.

We do point out (on website under First Timer and Safety Tips) that care needs to be taken when handling any of the metal parts, hinge, top, draft door as metal edges can potentially be sharp - as is always the case with a metal object. Whether it is a draft door, flashback or dropping an EGG while attempting to move it - there is always going to be an unforeseen potential for someone to injure themselves or damage their property for any number of reasons, and that is why we post extensive First Timer Tips and Safety Tips on the website. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We did like the suggestion for a remote control to operate the draft door -- maybe we can do Bluetooth wireless and work it from a cell phone!

@EGGzill Jr - it seems like some "Authorized Dealers" may need some additional instruction on proper assembly of the bottom vent. From this thread, and my own LBGE, which was assembled by the dealer, many of the vents are not being properly put together. Both my screen tabs, as well as my solid door tab are on the left. Didn't know that was wrong til this thread. Really appreciate the mother ship responding - reinforces the great customer service.

@EGGzilla, thank you very much for an informative and constructive response. I think it's a perfect conclusion to this wild ride of a thread. Nicely put.
