'''''What is the consensus'''''
Seeing "what is the consensus" for lots of items. People please read the different ways to cook and different ideas and then mix and match to suit yourself and YOUR way of cooking. Looks like we are trying to get a full vote on the best way to do everything now. Read, ask questions but don't try to see if 17 will do it this way and only 3 will do it that way.
Just noticed this poping up more and more, maybe it is just me and if so: sorry to bring it up.

I prefer asking questions with at least 3 asterisks placed at the beginning and the end rather than quotation marks... but thatt is just me.

Mickey - Good Post. I whole heartily agree. I can be pretty opiniated about "my" way of doing things sometimes - that said - continually learning from the other perspectives that are offered.
For new people to the Egg, will share my peronsal experience -- when I first started, I did extensive research and questioning about how to do a certain type of cook. Was trying to learn what was different/unique about cooking on the Egg. The best thing that helped me was to "jump in and cook". Yep, had a couple of less than stellar results. But once I started trying things - learned even more.
I kind of smile when I see a new person on the forum - asking how to cook something - and realize that I asked the very same question a few months ago. That is part of the beauty of this forum. Beginner, moderate experience, and expert advice is available here.

Being new to the BGE I prefer to ask questions and read how others do things and try them or modify them to what best works for me . What works for one and feels right might not for another . But by reading and asking how others do things help I think in the long run .in my short time here I've learned a ton from the seasoned and newbies here .thanks to everyone that sharesLarge Big Green Egg , XL Big Green Egg . its mostly newbies that need to know every tiny detail, then they do the cook, change the setup, use a different dome temp, and ask what went wrong

i am guilty of it at times becuase it is convenient. truthfully, if you search you will see not only your question being answered in a thread- but then typically there is 20 variables thrown in there as well that give you more than sufficient information to make a determination on how to prep for your cook.

Please understand I am happy with questions from new guys and the same question over and over. NO PROBLEM from me. Just for some reason it seems of late several are not posing questions but asking for votes of what way to do something. I try to answer all questions and give my 2cents as another way to do it. Hell, enough of you guys did a lot of hand holding for me several years ago. Just a few questions of late that i am getting way to cynical about.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

I kind of enjoy reading those posts. It gives the more knowledgeable cooks the ability to explain how and why they do things along with showcasing their talent. Newby's can get well ahead of the game and it's still up to the reader if they want to give it a whirl. I have my ways, but enjoy reading different perspectives and experiences.
So, whats the consesus???? Would you rather be reading a what's the consensus post about methods of cooking or a what's the consensus post about what's the consensus posts????

I have been around for only a few months, but I think the amount of knowledge that can be gained by using the search function is lost on a lot of new guys. There are a lot of old posts with loads of information for folks.

I read the forum(s) for ideas on *what* to cook. I rarely, if ever, use the recipe (if it is given). Instead, I'll google for that dish and read several recipes, then use what I like in each of them to create what I want.Ex: Ennie meenie (of the other forum) posted "clams casino" about a month ago. I googled and took several ideas. I was very pleased with the outcome (see below). Then, not long ago, Mickey posted a thread on caramelizing onions. I had never done that before. And, last week, Necessary Indulgences posted (on Facebook) a Bison with caramelized onions and mushrooms on top. That did it. I made it with a ribeye steakDripping Springs, Texas

i get this. i can only read so many threads about replacing a gasket with a nomex or rutland. i have yet to do mine but will search those threads agaon.. every possible scenario of what type to use or go gasket free has been beat to death.
i will say i do prefer the flat view with sub forumns over this layout.. but that is just me.

People can TRY to get a "best" vote but it won't really work. I do these those topics are good for surveying effective methods. Each person must choose in life what to do with all the information that comes past them. I simply try to share what I have witnessed working.

This might be off topic, but I'm cooking some chicken thighs tonight....what's the consensus on how to do them?

hd those stuffed clams look killer. what actually makes a casino recipe verse a stuffed clam, only thing that pops out at me is the parmesian and less in the shell for presentation

That's how I start all my cooks. But I'm all out of bourbon, guess I'll stop and pick some up on the way home. What's the consensus on Pappy's?Fishless - why don't you try them that way and report back to us? If you can.....

Always, Always, ALWAYS start with a cold drink. For me, it is a cold beer. My big brother got his first BGE on Father's Day. He called me for advice so I told him that the Egg will not light unless he has a drink in his hand. I know mine won't.This might be off topic, but I'm cooking some chicken thighs tonight....what's the consensus on how to do them?
The consensus is to start with a cold drink. Can't wait to see what you stuff your thighs with, Griffin!I'm Kristi ~ Live in FL ~ BGE since 2003.
I write about food & travel on Necessary Indulgences. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. -
A good drink, coals lit, dome closed, and a ceramic cooker is the best way to go AND the consensus!

Not to hijack the thread or anything but I am a newbie, got my Egg for Father's Day. I have cooked chicken, pizza and ribs thus far and it has all come out good...room for improvement, but still very good. But I have so many questions and look to this forum to help me out.
Well here goes....I really need help to tell me what the consensus is on what I am hungry for......
Thanks for all your help! (hey I mean this in a very lighthearted way...people who know me know I am quite sarcastic and dry with my humor....do not mean to offend anyone...and my consensus is that this is a great forum!)
-
Chunky - I was having the same problem today. My consensus was to copy (somewhat) Kristi's (Necessary Indulgences) stuffed chicken thighs wrapped in bacon. And I got your sense of humor.

I'm new to egging, so appreciate the help. I don't think its so much as a poll as it is asking what everyone does. If you give your best example then we know it must be good to you. Just my two cents worth.LBGE, Weber Grills, Silverback Pellet grill, PBC. No I don't have a grill issue.

ALL veterans think the way the do (insert ribs, etc) is the best way. You can see two opposite approaches and I guarantee that both of the vets got the results they are looking for. As lousubcap says, enjoy the journey.

Am I the only one on this forum that uses the search engine or looks through the recipes sections? I feel like most people skip looking and just post a question. I think you can get a few different ideas in the search results. Many times, I have seen the more seasoned posters on this forum (of which I am not included) doing a search and then posting the search results as an answer to a question.
I was going to start a new post about it but didn't want people to think it was sour grapes. It's hard to believe that the answers to most of the questions asked are not readily available in older posts on the same topic.
Anyway, not exactly on topic but something I have been noticing recently.XL,L,SWinston-Salem, NC -
Yeah, not a lot of people use the search function (not that this one works that great) on any forum. I can tell you that some of the forums I have been on, whether its BBQ, Jeeps, offroad, RC or whatever, the same questions pop up over and over again. And somebody always says use the search function (although I've never seen it here). It's not something that is going to change. You can either answer the question or ignore them, that's all you can do. Telling them do use the search function is like beating a dead horse. Sometimes I'll answer, depending on my mood, sometimes somebody will beat me to the punch. It's all good, though. We were all newbies here at one time or another and we all like to help each other out.

I have noticed search function is rarely used here too. While I don't tell people "USE SEARCH", I do think that it is valuable. Sometimes if the exact question has been asked recently I will suggest looking for that the corresponding thread.
