Gasket - Am I just being cheap?
So, I came across this site (http://www.thefeltstore.com/Portal.aspx?CN=1BB49DD3DA1A&MN=F5BFA4AE671C). For about 40 bucks, I can get a sheet of nomex (1/8in thick, 72in long, 12in wide) delivered. I'm thinking I could cut this into strips and have enough gasket material for years to come. I think I'd need about 60in or so to get around the circumference of a Large, so 72in should be plenty long.
So what do you think? Is this a go?
PS, I'm fully aware many of you don't use gaskets, but I just love the feeling of a tight egg

For less than half that money, you can put on a Rutland gasket and it will last a lifetime. Just saying.Packerland, Wisconsin

Straight cut strips do not fit a circle very well.

I've read where there were safety/health concerns with the Rutland gaskets being near food. Is there any truth to that, or is it an unknown? Anyone have a link to a study on their safety? If they are sae to use, with no doubts, I'd be happy to drop the money on one and be done with my gasket issues forever.Athens, GA

On the top, bottom, or both?Eggo in N. MS -
its never been tested and they have a good market so are playing it safe, nomex hasnt been tested for food use either as far as i know. rutland is fiberglass, if you have pink fiberglasss insulation in your house, your risk is the same

Bottom only!!! Very pleased!!XL, Large, 2 Small's and Mini BGE Arlington Texas

Bottom or top, but only one. Bottom is way easier.
-
The reason for me putting it on the bottom is, In the event of any fibers coming or getting loose they wouldnt fall onto my food.XL, Large, 2 Small's and Mini BGE Arlington Texas

Re fibre glass in your home, yes it's there but in the walls not directly next to the food you are preparing so not quite the same. Why risk it, Nomex has been shown to be food contact safe.
-
Also if you think about it I've never seen or heard of someone wearing a fibre glass sheet but know that nomex is regularly used

Rutland health issues are speculation. Rutland's never been proven unhealthfuled egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

Original post asked if you were just being cheap? My father-in-law was just like this, always finding a home made remedy that saved cash and created solutions for future needs. Now that he has passed we have 4 tons of "solutions" that we have to sort through and dispose of somehow. I have recommended the 40 yard dumpster method. So I come down on the side of buy the replacement nomex gasket and then in 10 years when you need another one maybe we will have a new material that is even better, such as hi-temp ceramic cloth. Hopefully it will come with a peel and stick application that requires little if any prep, Until then, just keep on cooking!

I've worn Nomex flight suits for many years. It is used in flight suits because it does not burn, it chars so it will not melt to your skin in a fire like many other fabrics. If it was a health issue, I think I would have known about it by now.
