Had great success cooking butts on my large BGE, but am nervous about fitting 2 on the gril....seems like too much of the butts would be hanging off of the platesetter...thoughts?

You certainly can on the XL, chalk another one up for the big guy, ya Buddy.

sit them up on the ends

I have seen pictures of four in a large BGE. They were cooking on two levels to fit them in.XLBGE & LBGENorth Richland Hills, TX

I have seen at least two on a lg. Remember, after being on the grill a while, they will shrink just a bit.

I cooked 6 8 pounders on a 2 tier grid on a large with no problem. Sold my xl and got a large and small. Didn't care for the xl at all. Buy 2 Eggs for the price of one. Plus more versatile.

I've cooked two on my LBGE with no problem, have done it twice, both were decent sized as well, you should have no problem, don't worry about them touching, they'll shrink during the cook.
-
Yes easily. I have put 2 8 pounders in my small.
-
So it doesn't matter if the butts are outside the diameter of the platesetter?

I've done two boneless shoulders at one time. Combined they were barely under 19 pounds. My best recommendation would be to stabilize the egg at 275° before putting them in. With that much cold mass going inside, it drops the temp inside the egg fairly quick. Within 5-10 minutes, the egg was at 250° and held perfect. I learned this during the second double shoulder cook because I was busy playing catch up withthe temp when I initially stabilized it at 250°.
Pay close attention the first hour because you will have to close the vents slightly because the egg will recover and get over 250°Large BGE, Adjustable Rig, Small BGE, 2 BBQ Guru's, 18" WSM, Rockwood, Stage 3 Roush Mustang and a hot wife...

I always do two butts on the large. Recently did three with the addition of a raised grid.

I am wanting to do a whole shoulder? I love the meat from the lower leg and hock. It's the best. I think a LBGE will hold that. The that cooks under the skin is so YUM!Located in Western North Carolina

Hey bowhunr, did you do the rutland gasket on the top and bottom?
-
I'm pretty sure I could fit two on my med BGE. You shouldn't have any problem.

I've done 4 on a large with an extender from Ceramic Grill Store. But 2 is no problem at all.

I just did 2 seven pounders side by side on my medium last weekend. They were a tight fit but they made it. Therm probe did not even touch
Only 3 things in life matter. Family, Steelers and my BGE!!
