Well it took a few years of saving, then a lot of leg work, and calls. But I finally picked up my Large on Saturday (after going to my son's pinewood derby), and finding a local dealer starting a sale.
Got home, built my ghetto cinder block, and 2' X2' X2" paver block (thanks cazzy) and it was too cold to finish assembly, woke up on Sunday, calibrated thermometers, and put the rest together, and planned out the day's meals knowing I wouldn't do steaks or pizza.
I started with left over Royal Oak lump, but it was the bottom of the bag, and I had a lot of nuggets, and dust.
I had a hard time starting it. So I brought out the trusty chimney starter, and threw in some brand new Wicked Good Weekend warrior. That seemed to do the trick. But I was playing the chase the temp game.

We went with a 3 pound Pork loin with a Steven Raichlen coffee run, and asparagus. For the pork, I put in the place setter, and put a disposable foil tin with about 1" of water, and the left over rub (had to put it somewhere). I wasn't expecting much since I was busy watching the temp roller coaster, but....

Here is the meal:

the rub with brown sugar, and coffee crusted nicely.

Inside....Nice and juicy.

Looks wonderful! I would be plenty proud to get that kind of result first time out! Did you like the flavor...would you season that way again?

Oh, and how did you go about cooking the asparagus....how long what heat etc?

Thanks. It was plenty tasty. I'm usually a sweet pork guy, but all the family agreed that one is a keeper.

The asparagus was simplicity. Olive oil, salt, pepper. Basically I took the pork off, and put the platter on while the meat rested. Grill temp was about 350, and I think they were on for about 10 minutes.

Simplicity is something we often forget about, with all our magic rubs, marinades, and such we lose the flavor of the food we are cooking. Lightly dressed asparagus with some S&P, perfect!

Nit a problem. But I doubt there are many newbie than me at this point.

FWIW, here is the rub recipe used above:

1 Tbs. finely ground espresso coffee beans
2 tsp. pure ancho chile powder
    1 tsp. granulated garlic
    1/2 tsp. ground cumin
    1/2 tsp. brown sugar
    1/2 tsp. ground fennel seed
    1/8 tsp. ground allspice
    4 tsp. kosher salt
2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

It was a 3 lb. loin with the fat on top, and I cooked it about 1.5 hours around 350 (like I said earlier, dome thermometer was fluctuating).

Shiner used to get no respect.  Shiner is a little German town in Central Texas and the brewery has been there forever.  Last year, I gave some Mexican workers some Shiner I had, and they were blown away.  They said it was better than Corona, which was their beer of choice.

I'm not a beer drinker, but Shiner Boch is the only beer I'll put in my chili recipe.

I like the fact that no beer gets sold to the public without the approval of the citizens of the town. (At least, that's what I was told...or maybe read on the bottles). Hard to find up here in Oregon. One store used to have it, but went out of business.

Being a Mexican I would have to agree with VI, Shiner is a great beer, been drinking it since my spring break days at South Padre Island. That was a long long time ago. :)
