Plate Setter, Adjustable Rig Combo, or Woo3 Combo ?

Ok, so ive pretty much researched my mind numb... but there is just something about getting 1st hand advice from fellow eggheads. Im trying to decide between the BGE Plate Setter, Adjustable Rig Combo & Woo3 Combo - both from http://www.ceramicgrillstore.com Who has what & why ?

Here is what Im thinking :

Option 1 - Large Woo3 Combo, w/ oval stone. This is all I realistically need & seems very simple, user friendly & moderately priced in the middle of all 3 options.

Option 2 - Large Adjustable Combo - This is everything I need plus more if I wanted it to be. Cost is the most of all 3 options.

Option 3 - BGE Plate Setter - As simple as it is, it works.  I can continue using fire bricks to raise a second grill level.  This is the cheapest option.  If I go this route the money I save would be put towards a maverick...which I dont have.

So lets hear it ...

TIA

  • I use my platesetter all the time,With bricks and another grill. Cost of extra grill $10.00 and had the bricks. I think the Platesetter is about $125.00. Good luck,Hard decesion to make

  • Plate Setter. I can't imagine needing more than that when cooking a "normal" meal or cooking for a decent sized get together.

That being said, I'm considering buying an adjustable rig to help me prep a meal for 60 people on my large.

  • I have the plate setter (it was a gift) and the large adjustable rig combo.  I use the rig most of the time - I only occasionally use the plate setter with a large dutch oven I have.  The adjustable rig gives me more capacity with the two grids and the stone being a little lower in the firebox on indirects seems to give me a little better temp control for some reason.  I bought the rig with the oval grid and the optional slide accessory to make the oval grid a sliding gird and use that quite often.

What is this Maverick you speak of?

I have the adjustable rig set up and really like its versatility.....raised cooks, multilevel cooks, indirect- all a breeze. I also have the oval grid with slide and find it very useful.

The first question you should ask/answer is the platesetter vs. Woo3 (+ stone) question.  I think this is a no brainer in favor of the Woo3.  The Woo3 costs only a few $ more, and it does everything a platesetter does, plus it does raised direct grilling.

As for the Woo3  vs. the Adjustable Rig? The AR is a great piece, but it will cost you some $, especially if you get all the options.  If you do the type of cooks it is made to handle, then there is nothing else like it.

@Hi54putty, ok ok.  That is what I thought.  But, I got a little confused because they have been talking about plate setters and woos and all.  Thats why I asked!

    Thanks

I went with the XL Woo and stone combo and don't have the plate setter.  It's a versatile combo.  I use the lower rung for either a stone for indirect or my cast iron grate for steaks.

I'd get the Woo3 combo (round stone) since its on sale and have the ability to go raised grill.  for a few dollars less, a large spider and stone is $60 and will provide the indirect cook function of the plate setter.

I appreciate all the responses.  Its really down for the PlateSetter & Woo3 Combo for me... the AR is the ultimate tool, but I just dont think I will ever use it as it was intended to.

I can get a platesetter for about  $70.  The Woo3 combo would be about $14 after shipping & tax.

Like I said I can get the BGE PlateSetter ($70) & Maverick ET732($55) for  $135 after tax & shipping ... a little cheaper than the Woo3 & AR...

    Whats the better value ?

Also, to the guys with the oval stones - do you like them ? Do you also use a round stone when not cooking ribs or briskets ?

I see the woo3 for 69.95 + shipping with round stone.  Platesetter is $70.  Again, the woo3 is a much better value for the small difference in $.

As for the Maverick .... yeah, you'll need something like that too, regardless of what you decide.

    Taylor -

Almost everyone here is going to tell you to get the spider/woo stuff.

I have the platesetter and the Maverick, use them weekly, and am very happy with the thermal control they provide.

The only thing the CGS stuff offers that I don't get with my current setup, as near as I can tell, is an easily raised direct grate.  With patio pavers and a throw away old 13" SS grate I get that plus an extended grill surface (haven't has a need for this yet, but it is available to me whenever I want).

Love the platesetter and the Maverick is almost an essential for worry free overnight low and slows.

I relate to your saying you're broke.  Go with the platesetter.  Get the Maverick off Amazon (mine was $45 shipped, no idea what it's at now).  85% of your Egging will be covered.  Save up for meat, a pizza stone (get the Corderite from Sur la Table or simple kiln shelving), and a decent SS wok.  Look down the road or ask for a Thermapen as a present.  Anyway - all this stuff can be had for cheap if you hunt online for the good deals.

    Good luck!

Well said and I completely agree. I have the plate setter, 2 grates and 3 bricks. There has not been a situation where those did not work for a cook.

  • I went with the platesetter before I did enough research and learned about the Woo3.  Since I had made my purchase of the platesetter and used it, I just got the Spider and wok.  This should cover most of my needs except an elevated cooking surface...I'll get some fire bricks and extra grate for that.

I have all three and use them all, depending on what I'm cooking.  I love the AR with sliding shelves and oval stone for ribs, etc.  The Woo is easy to use and set up, raises above the gasket.  I use the plate setter for indirect chicken etc, although the AR or WOO would work as well.

    I LIKE OPTIONS!

I have medium so my only option was a Woo2. (Besides a platesetter) It however covers everything I need. Tom's stuff on CGS is second to none. I loved the idea of an AR but the woo covers all my needs. Can't get enough of this thing!
