Depends on how much you want to spend.  Thermopen is a fantastic instant read thermometer, but pricey.  I also have a maveric ET-732 which I love for low/slow meals.  Some love stokers, BBQ Gurus among others for long cooks, definitely on the high end but some people swear by it (I think to expensive).

How much are you looking to spend and what will you need it for?
  • I don't know, but want something effective yet still affordable. What do you use? I mainly cook small dinners for two so far, but want to cook all types of things such as brisket, pork butts, steaks, etc..
  • I missed your first comment...sorry! How much is the Maverick?
  • Thermo Pen hands down,The ultimate 1st tool. So good on so many levels.Worth the 1 time price

  • Is the Thermo Pen an instant read device? Are they good for low/slow cooking? Have you tried thermocouple?

thermopen is an instant read, the instant read.  Fantastic tool an I love it - I think some have said they have seen it for as low as $69 - can't remember.  Maverick ET-732 is a low/slow devise, probe for food and grill.  Wireless with good range in most houses and about $60 I think.  Maverick can also be used for higher temp cooks also; advertised to withstand heat to somewhere north of 700 degrees I think - don't know how true this is. Maverick and thermopen are the best in my opinion; the others stoker etc... are just very expensive add-ons that some people like to buy.
  • +1 on the Maverick (though I have the older ET-73 model) - but I've heard that the ET-732 is even better!!
Don't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup... Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend. - Bruce Lee

Just purchased the Maverick ET-732 from Amazon for $60 with free shipping and no tax.

While I am very certain that the Maverick and Thermopen are excellent devices, I am still using an inexpensive AccuRite probe type thermometer for slow cooks.  It has 3+ years of service and is going strong.  Bought it at Lowes for less than 20 bucks I believe.

I also have the BGE instant read thermometer.  It isn't the fastest digital thermometer, but it gets the job done.

When these devices wear out I will likely upgrade to Thermopen and Maverick.

Hogaholic- the big advantage of the maverick over the one you show is the maverick is dual probe so one goes in the meat (like yours) and then it has one that clips on the grate to monitor the cooking temp at grid level...

    Yea, I knew that.  Thanks.
