Plate Setter Cleaning

No. 1, is it necessary to clean the plate setter after indirect cooking?  Mine gets a lot of drippings that build up on the surface.  No. 2, if cleaning is necessary, what is the best way to do it?  I know you are not to use cleansers and cleaning it in plain hot water is difficult.
