Royal Oak is good. I know that is who makes BGE and I read they also make Publix brand as well. Who knows. Cowboy is good/not so good depending on with whom you talk.
Good site to bookmark.
Whiz - Publix up to $5.99 lb if you want to up date your site.

I have only used the BGE brand and Wicked Good weekend warrior so far. Personally I would rather spend the money on good charcoal and have quality results vs save a buck for something that does not last as long.
-
I use two: Royal Oak, and Wicked Good.
In my experience, Royal Oak burns hotter and faster, while Wicked Good burns cooler and longer. Plus, WG is much more expensive. So I only use WG for low and slow cooks, and I use RO for everything else.
-
Does the taste of your food vary from brand to brand?

I used to use royal oak and then bought ozark oak from grillstuff.com. I recently ran out of the ozark oak and bought 5 bags of the royal oak again. The royal oak is not near as good as the ozark oak in my opinion. Lots of small pieces compared to ozark oak. You have to spend $100 at grillstuff.com to get free shipping so you have to buy 120 pounds but I will be ordering ozark oak from here on out.
-
I use maple leaf lump charcoal I find it better then royal oak but it harder to light. I get mine at rona here in halifaxCheers! Shawn My Blog: http://hrmcreativebbq.blogspot.com/ My Dads Custom Handles Blog http://dannyscarvings.blogspot.com

Lit, have you ordered a large quantity from grillstuff? If so, how did it go? $8.95 for 10 pounds with free shipping sounds like a great deal. I'd certainly buy a large quantity if they'll handle it.
The Naked Whiz -
Royal Oak. I would like to try Wicked if I can get over the shipping cost.
-
I used a few bags of Fire King last year but my dealer switched to Ozark Oak this year. I like both. I've heard Fire King was purchased by Royal Oak. I used a couple bags of Royal Oak steakhouse and it was ok for the price. Here is a great link. http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lump.htm

Naked Whiz - I ordered 12 bags and they were at my door in GA in 3 days. Got here much faster than I expected with free shipping.
-
I have been using BGE but just splurged on 3 bags of Wicked Good. I like it very much - lights easily, burns clean and gives off no blue "volatile" smoke upon lighting. I would use it all the time, but as said above, shipping is brutal. I spent $41 on the charcoal and $42 to get it to me - ouch!

I would like to try a bag of the Ozark to see if it is better than Publix. Publix is jsut so cheap at $5.99 and then they run sales at $4.99. Just hate to but 12 and not tell a difference. hummmmmm I'm in SC which isn't too far from GA. I could swing by and try a cook, Lit? lolJoe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

Odd that you would say that 'blue' smoke is volatile ... it's the white smoke you need to worrry about ...Never eat anything passed through a window unless you're a seagull ... BGE Lg. -
How does the saying go....if it's white, it aint right....if it's blue, it's time for "Q"Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

Never saw white smoke. What is that from?

4 Runner--where are you in SC. I thought about ordering Ozark Oak but 12 bags is a lot, we could split in 1/2. I am in Greenville
-
Royal Oak has been working very well for me. About $6.50 for a 10lb. bag. I buy 6-10 bags at a time from Wal Mart.

@Egghead123SC - I'm in Columbia. Not sure it is worth the hassle for us. I do keep about 6 bags of Publix Greenwise on hand at any given time though.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I used nothing but BGE lump in the past. Then my buddy David and his wife brought by some lump called Dragon Breath.I have been using this ever since. It holds a great temp over long cooks and doesn't break the bank.Locally, I can purchase for $15.99 a bag vice 25.00 for BGE.It also has good reviews on Naked Whiz. Here is the link: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpdatabase/lumpbag78.htmTodd www.smokinfyrpit.com https://www.facebook.com/SmokinFyrPit pitmaster@smokinfyrpit.com Dragon Breath Lump Charcoal Dealer XL Big Green Egg & Large Big Green Egg Rebel 23' Smoker DigiQ DXII & Cyber Que WIFI KCBS Member & CBJ

I figure 120 pounds of lump is nothing over the course of a year. It's Ozark Oak, which has always been good, and it's relatively cheap. Since it appears that Wal*Mart may not be carrying RO any more, free shipping on .90/lb Ozark Oak seems like a no brainer for my purposes.
The Naked Whiz -
4runner--nope, too big a hassle to split a load if you are in Columbia. Just asking to see if by chance in the upstate.
-
We started selling Basque Natural Lump Charcoal, so far so good with it. It light's easy had lots of big chunks and is MUCH hotter burning than Royal Oak or the BGE Brand.
-
I get B&B Lump Charcoal from Central Market (Texas) for $10.99 for a 20lb bag. Of course it doesn't last quite as long as BGE and has a few smaller pieces, but for the money it's absolutely the best I've found. Central Market also has a branded mesquite lump for $11.99 for a 20lb bag which I also recommend.
-
I use nothing but Grove Charcoal. Not sure how widespread it is nationwide but is highly rated at the Naked Whiz site. I pay $12.50 for a 20lb bag. Made in Wisconsin and great stuff.
Packerland, Wisconsin -
I have had bad luck with the two bags of WG I tried (hard to light). I am trying Royal Oak this weekend since I had no problems with BGE lump.
-
I have tried several but nothing has been better than Ozark Oak especially for low and slows. RO isnt bad but wont last like OO
If anyone on here knows where i can find Ozark Oak in Albuquerque Please let me know!!!
Thanks

What about frontier brand lump. I did read that N.Whiz has it rated ok. I will be trying it later this week when my order comes in. $6.50/10lb bag.Who cares I'll post where I want
-
I always use Wicked Good Weekend Warrior, nice aroma and lasts a long time. I tried Ozark Oak recently and was not impressed. Visit the Naked Whiz site for many reviews, as we all have different likes and dislikes.

I'm in Wisconsin as well and I use the Grove Charcoal, and have been for years in my old Weber Kettle. Come to think of it my father used it all the time as well, so I guess that's about 15-20 years of Grove. Burns great, food tastes great!
However I will admit a small conflict of interest, The company is owned by the father of a friend of mine. So I may have a bit of a bias. I believe all the charcoal is made in Canada now (blame the EPA and OSHA), but the company is located in Cedar Grove, about 40 minutes drive north of Milwaukee.
