I have been using the green egg charcoal for the past 6 months. Thought it was pretty good but expensive ($24-$27) for a 20 lb bag. Just picked up three 10 lb bags of Royal Oak lump at Walmart (made in USA). The Naked Whiz rated it highly. Wondering if there will be a noticeable difference? It was only $6.89 per bag.

I have used several different brands of lump Oak and have not noticed a difference in the cooking

I buy my lump for $16.09 for 40 lbs and 40 lbs of Mesquete for $10.89

Depending on where you live if there is a restaurant depot near you you can get royal oak #20 for about $12. It is real good.

Get Royal Oak in the USA bag red in color. You can find it in you local Wal-mart for $6.37 per 10 pound bag and is the same as the BGE brand made by the same company. Tim

Royal Oak makes (private lables) GBE brand, Kroger Brand and several other brands. They are all from the same source.

I used to be stuck on one brand of lump, but recently started using various types. The biggest reason is that I ran out of my portion of a pallet of Wicked Good.. Anyways - Variety is good. . I've now got some lump I like for Pizza and long cooks (heavier denser stuff), and then the lighter stuff for poultry, sometimes cooks it just doesn't matter, etc... Now when I see a new kind of lump at a store I just buy it and see for myself.

I have been using red bag Royal Oak for years now. I buy it at either Wallmart or Restaurant Depot. It is my lump of choice. BGE lump on the west coast is now $30 per bag.

I stick with BGE lump 22$ a bag in my part of IOWA and its way better than the Frontier or Cowboy in my opnion. Burns longer and smells better. Tried the Ozark oak one time well bought 6 bags and was not

in love with that one at all...

Find what you like and stay with it for consistent cooks.

If you've got a Menard's nearby, they sell Royal Oak Steakhouse lump in 8.8 # bags for about $6. Good stuff, it's all I use.

I have used various brands and I keep coming back to Royal Oak in the red bag. Our Wally World must stock lump all year round, never had a problem finding lump in the winter . Thanks goodness there is no Q season here in Texas. :-D

I am sticking with BGE too. I know that it is the same manufacturer behind everything, but it seems the BGE charcoal gets handled better or is pulled before the small pieces get labeled with another name. Maybe it is just my area but if I want chunks bigger than a golf ball, and I do, then BGE is the only choice. BGE Lump is consistent in that area, my dealer has it year year round, and the big boxes stop carrying charcoal and grilling supplies in August.

Have used BGE lump all the time except for a small bag of Best of the West Mesquite Charcoal, only because I believed what was written on the bag. "recommended by the Naked Whiz." Of course I did that before reading the review on the Whiz's site - which rated it below average. How true was that! Used it twice and threw the rest out. Returned to the BGE lump but at $29.95 (Canada) per bag from the dealer, I'm going to try Dragon Breath Lump next because it is eight bucks cheaper and highly recommended by the Naked Whiz.
