Pulled the trigger and spent the last week or so working during the evenings on a table...just finished it up!
I didn't have the budget for hardwood of any kind, so I picked up a outdoor table built by another off of craigslist and disassembled it for a cheap starter pile of wood. Was able to build the whole frame out of that, and bought some new PT lumber for the top of each shelf. Really happy with the way it turned out, thanks to naked whiz and his incredible plans for helping this project to happen.
Happy fourth everyone!

very nice. you come up with the plans yourself? i've been toying with the idea of giving mine a cool home like that. not the best wood worker on the planet but i think i can manage a table that won't look too bad ...

I loosely used the plans developed by naked whiz. Built it around a different type of frame made from 4 x 4s, but the rest of the structure is very similar. His measurements for shelf heights and hole sizes, etc are invaluable.
Best of luck...No single thing was too hard, just took some time. I highly recommend consulting your local landscape supply store for any stone you might need. They had way more selection than any of the big box stores, and the stone was a lot nicer quality.
