Egg \' Burn Off\' unsuccessful, Help

Confession: my XLG is a filthy egg. So after a rib cook today, I thought I would do a high temperature 'burn off'. There was still burning lump to which I added more lump until the fire box was 1/2 to 3/4 full. I removed the daisy top and opened the bottom vent wide open.
It certainly cleaned the plate setter, and the grates, but the inside of my egg is still pitch black. I tried to scrape off the black stuff, but nothing would scrape off. What gives? Others have posted pics of pristine eggs after a cleansig 'burn off'. What did I do wrong?

Try it again without the platesetter. That happens to me also.

Rebecca, I ball up tinfoil and scrub it and that helps. is it oily slimy? it might take a bit of scrubbing to get the bulk of it. also you want to use the heavy duty foil so it keeps the shape better.
-
Slap on a welding glove and wad up a ball of tinfoil. Take the tinfoil and rub the sides of the egg. You'll be amazed at what comes off.
I cleaned mine today and found there is a serial number or something on the inside of the dome.
Good luck,
Ted -
Pat, the plate setter that I 'cleaned' was a broken one and I carefully removed it half way through the burn and added more lump...........
-
I think the black is just like the surface of a cast-iron pan, it's supposed to be black; don't worry about it._____________

Julie and TRPIV, does the egg still have to be hot when you scrape it with the foil?
-
Yeah, but Botch, this egg was getting disgusting. There's oil glopping down and I'm afraid it might effect the flavor of my cooks. Then again, maybe people expect an 'off' flavor to my cooks.
-
The glop should burn off, how long did you let it go?
-
1 - 1 1/2 hours!
-
I've been successful with both hot and cold cleaning. The hot ones haven't been any more successful than the cold.
When it's cold, the oily stuff tends to smear around. -
TRPIV, I just went out to try the foil scrape. The egg is down to 350 degrees. I couldn't scrape much off.
-
maybe I need more elbow grease?
-
not long enough IMHO. I let mine get to the rip roaring stage and let it burn itself out, without opening until the next day.
-
your too quick you need to go 3 or 4 hours
-
I should have added though my burn offs leave my firebox fairly white and 50-50 of a job on the firering, but the dome itself has never returned to white or anything even close - EVER! OTOH the scaley stuff flakes off and that's what I want to do anyway. Personally the foil ball has never done much for me, but a narrow bladed, semi-flexible putty knife does wonders.
-
Pat, you've got mail.

Ron, I couldn't help but think about you this weekend. I bought a quart of the concentrated Liquid Fence. Even though it was in the bottle, I swear some molecules leaked out......I smell a little bit like rotten eggs.
-
Rebecca - I wish you would have made that more clear! - Now people will think I smell like Liquid Fence!
Seriously when I go for a new bottle I sniff the cap well before buying it because one time I didn't and found that someone had punctured the foil seal for whatever reason. The only thing that saved me was I always secure it upright and tightly in my trunk for transportation. That stuff is BAD, but it really works! -
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I was looking for or this but I found this

If you leave the platesetter in it will only clean(turn white)the lower part of the egg and the bottom of the platesetter.Fill it up with lump with nothing in it except the fire box and fire ring and let it run wide open with bottom and top vents completely open til the fire burns out and the entire inside of the egg will be white. You can clean grates and platesetters by putting them in for a high temp burn for a few hours but do not do that when you are attempting a whole egg clean burn. Here are a couple of pics of my egg after a clean burn "my way".The egg was 2 years old when I did the burn.
Before the burn.
-
In the past I have tried to do high temp. clean burns with and without the plate setter. No real success here either.
I get the creosote chunks off of the dome by using a 6" diameter funnel, wide end against the egg dome, and then scrape. That gets off all the chunky stuff but not a real clean.

Hoss, psssst......I wouldn't show any pics on the forum that show what a chub of loney can do to the inside of egg! Maybe that's what got my egg in this condition! :woohoo:
-
That makes me feel better Kent!
-
  .I promise,if you fill er up and let er burn til she goes out with no obstructions inside, she will be pristine.I filled mine up to the top of the fire ring and let her go,bottom vent wide open and no top.
-
not me, I want a 'white' egg again, dang it
Kent -
my head is still aching from this thought process, but I have to ask - was the pix of the bag of Ozark Oak meant to mean you used it after the burn out OR that you sacrificed Ozark Oak to achieve that burn out?
-
Then buy a new one and NEVER use it! :woohoo:
-
