I remember a thread from a couple years back that I thought was pretty interesting and some downright funny. Well I am pretty much finished with this little lagging kitchen project and thought some of you may have interest in this method of storing spices. I saw it first on the food network, I think whatz's nuts Alton or something did it on his set. What really drove the little containers was AZRPs' way of buying spices, from the produce area in the little plastic bags. If you compare the price of one bag of spice, which is 2x more product, plus a magnetic container, with the same bottle of spice in the spice isle, it's a wash. The little containers can be found at Bed bath and beyond. And ya, it is 10 different kinds of salt, but I'm working on it. :P
So lets see all the different methods, gang.
Still need a few more containers for a couple stragglers in the drawer. And if DOW sees this, my 9 batches of chili gobbled down all the medium chimayo. :(

I've got the same set up in my kitchen, except I'm way more anal than you. All my labels are the same font, put on straight, and leveled as you look at them. The containers are in alphabetical order and evenly spaced side to side and top to bottom. And yes, I'm serious.
Awesome way to store spices. -
I think it is very cool, Adam. I would love a spice cabinet like that. I really don't see how being OCD could improve on it.Happily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 5 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!
3 Large, 1 Small, 1 well-used Mini -
What an awesome setup! Nice collection too.
-
I think you would make IKEA proud..
that's awesome!context is important -
mine is slightly 'home made' in a way too, but no more than just writing the names of each spice on a cork. (see the rack in back)
this is a pic from a cook a while ago, with the spice rack in the back. it's probably the worst way to store them. clear glass, cork. they don't get direct sun, and we do use them up somewhat quickly, but i really should keep them in a cool dark place.
i like alton's set-up. yours looks just like it. can't go wrong very much if you follow that guy's leaded egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
Adam, Nice looking display area. Mine could use some organizing, it is very messed up.
-
That is an envious set up. I need a new kitchen!
-
Very nice. But watch out, you are on a slippery slope. If you happen to go to an Asian market where something like coriander is sold by the pound, for the same price as a few ounces, you will soon find you need labeled bins. And vacuum sealed containers!!

Tjank god, I'm not the only one. :woohoo:

i like that idea, might not match my slum decor  how do i get on one of those ugly kitchen makeover shows
there is a hidden systym, i move the old spices to the front and they jump into the barrel when im not looking :ermm:
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
i think i got a whole pillow case of dried red peppers for about five bucks in the one near me.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

A lot more organized than mineLarge, small and mini now Egging in Rowlett Tx

what is that homeless guy doing in your living room slash kitchen slash bathroom?
(nice butcher block, man. and to be honest, i should take a pic of my OTHER spice rack. looks just like yours)
the small bottles are what we took home when cleaning out my wife's parents' house... we don't normally have that much stuff on hand. some of those things are so old they have Bruce Jenner on the label (joke)ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
Is that a hint?

i think he is stealing my road kill hat  7 stinky muskrats from the new hampshire roadkill auction :laugh:fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

You would end up in ICU if you saw my overstuffed, custom made, 36" pull-out shelves that the contractor said "way more room than you will ever use"

MIL had some 13 y/o Paul Newman's dressing in her fridge

Very nice Adam - I'm close on the OCD level
Made a couple of these a while back and then found some made from bamboo that could be extended.
Don't have the tins on the door but I'm going to look into them
BTW - It's all in alphabetical order  -
oh my...
that would test even my lax 'rules' about food safety :laugh:ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -

WOW! Some of you people are in need of some serious help! Who wooda thunk it? Closet spice junkies! or is it spice closet junkies?
In the spice world I must be a minimalist . . . or heaven forbid a . . . conservative! :S
Hmmm, makes me wonder how a pro like LC stores her spices?
Great post Adam, very nice storage.

Very nice Adam!

I will take the fish, the butcher block and the new bathroom ..... the hat you can keep! unless I get the "camp" on sabago with it!
-
I was thinking the same thing. Some of y'all look as though you are prepared for a great spice armageddon.
I like the Alton Brown method but it was going to be to pricey for the whole set up so I bought one of those cheesey spice rack set ups which I hate because the jars are too small to get anything larger than a 1/2 tsp measuring spoon inside them. -
We all have our 'issues', good luck with yours.

Richard,
Thank goodness for the guardrail in pic 1. and in pic 3 on the 3rd shelf in the back third from the left is that Lions Tap seasoning and truly does rock on burgers. I used the last of mine on yesterdays hefty Jucy Lucy. -
-
also some empties under the little shelves that I need to find more of.
'The Keg' chicken and rib rub is like no other. :woohoo: -
by jolly I spy a black topped container 1/3 yet full of Witchy Red do I not? From my kitchen to your kitchen via fishlessman!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
