Egg table

Need to get active and start my egg table. I have a Large, Medium and Mini. What is the most popular wood to use, and why? Help. Any plan suggestions for a new home for my eggs? Has anyone used one type of wood for the frame and a different type for the surface?

Cypress is an excellent choice for Egg Tables because it is impervious to rot. It works easily, is lightweight, takes a nice finish and is pretty in-expensive. You should be able to find it in Knoxville but not at the Big Box stores. Call around to local lumber yards. FYI, cypress is what the factory tables are made from.
Their are many other choices, cedar, oak, redwood, to name a few.
Stay away from treated pine and the synthetic decking material.
Hope this helps a little

Since you have 3 BGE's have you considered doing a brick or stacked stone cooking area. There are several nice ones on the Naked Whiz page...similar to this

Lots of folks seem to use cypress. Look for hardwood dealers in your area. Yes, I know cypress isn't a hardwood, but that's where I find it here in CT. I haven't decided what to use on the table I want to build - still under consideration.
You might also consider Western red cedar, white oak, mahogany or teak. Check on a second mortgage before you price teak though. Here, it's $30 per board foot!!
A quick search of woodfinder found this place in Knoxville...

PT wood has a bad rep. Yella wood brand Pt pine is treated with copper. If you seal it with varnish it make a very good table. You do need to let it dry for month or two before working it. You can special order thru home depot KDAT Yella wood. Stands for kiln dried after treatment. More expensive, but don't need to wait before working, and less waste due to warping.
