Wow, never even thought about the danger. I always wear a welding glove. Is this setup safer simply because the bottle is never turned upside down?
In the pic I'm using propane, but I've since switched to MAPP gas.
-
Are you sure that head can use MAPP or MAPP-Pro? I've always read warnings never to put a MAPP tank on a propane head - but you can go the other way.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

first time the lump pops and a piece lands on an eye lid, well.... you should wear sunglassesfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Its Benzomatic weed burner that is capable of using both MAPP or Propane. I made sure of that when I bought it.

You know I find it surprising that so many people are knocking using MAPP gas to light the egg. When I first bought mine I used a charcoal chimney, but it was all the rage to get a MAPP gas torch to light the egg quickly so I followed suit.
Now we are all of a sudden against them. Thoughts? -
A lot of sidetracks in this thread, but read Gator Baits main post for a good summary.
I for one, will continue using my torch, albeit with a little more attention to detail and inspection of the canister neck. I think the original link (2008 article) was by someone who abused the torch, threw it in his bonfire and then wanted to get support for blaming the company ( info gathered from reading several of the other links posted in this thread). -
ive had 2 torch heads go up in flames, i think im the only one to ever post against their use in an egg. i think the only real concern would be to look over the tank fitting before use as that seems to be the issue, if it doesnt look damaged your good to go. my torch heads went to flames because i have this tendency to just stand the torch lit in the lump unnattended to get another beverage, i guess ill never learn to grab two drinks before lighting an egg. :laugh:fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

i did find a newr lawsuit impending in 2011, but it was another cry to start a class action i think.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

If one holds the unit only by the torch part and holds it horizontally, then it seems there is more pressure on the neck than if one were to hold the unit by the canister in a horizontal position since the canister weighs considerably more than the torch part.
I hold mine, with the lock on, by the base and light 3 areas of lump, working first with the farthest spot to avoid reaching the unit (and my hand  ) over a burning spot. Nothing to put pressure on the torch end, unless I carelessly bump it against the wall of the Egg. Store it upright against a platesetter in a closed cabinet (after it cools).
I think these precautions will continue to keep my torch in a safe working condition. -
Clark, that is exactly how I've been using mine for about 10 years. The last couple of months, though, I've been using cut-up cubes of Weber's fire starter lighted by a flick-on lighter, because I found an aged box of them at the bottom of my deck box of accessories. I really like them because they light immediately and burn for a while, and the temp rises very quickly.Judy in San Diego

If I put my non-dominant hand over/under my dominant hand, I can't generate enough torque to move the dominant hand up/down

I appreciate you bringing this to our attention. I will make sure that my boys read this post and we have a talk about it as well.

Looks like your good to go, the brew can always be used to douse the flames and wash the sparks from your eyes!
All joking aside, I would wear some eye protection. I am in the camp that needs reading glasses, they are cheep and do the job fairly well, not perfect but fairly well. Safety or shooting glasses would be better. Good excuse to get that AK-47 you always wanted.

Here are the pics.

I should have done video but you'll get the picture.
I had one Mapp gas tank that had a problem with the valve. It wouldnt work. So me, my son and a couple employees decided it would be cool to blow up! I had a small fire going on my property burning old tree limbs and we carefully planned it out. We would set it on a concrete block near the fire and my son would fire the AR-15 at the tank and I would crouch down behind a wheel barrow with my camera. The other 2 guys watched from a safe distance. BOOM! It was huge! We were all a safe distance but the tank ended up rolling back towards us. It was fun. Gonna do it again soon. I was a bit too zoomed in to really show the entire fireball.

I have the fat boy and never had a thought of explosion, although it does say not to hold upside down, should I be worried?
