I have been cooking on my large egg since 1997 and finally have bought a guru. I am seeking any tips on using it, specifically best place for pit thermometer placement. I used it to smoke a butt yesterday and had the placement on the grate and just threw on some ribs and have it clipped to the egg thermometer. Any helpful hints would be appreciated. I am new to the forum.

Hi Danny,
Welcome to the forum. I think the best place is as close to the meat as possible. Someone posted a good suggestion the other day- if using a meat thermometer you can clip it to the insulated portion of that. This way, the pit probe is close to the center of the meat.
However, I don't think it really matters that much. If you have it clipped to the dome, it might be 15-20 degrees cooler on the grid but it doesn't really matter that much IMO. Just set the target a little higher.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
Welcome! I used mine for the first time yesterday and through the night to cook a brisket. I clipped mine directly to the grid in front of the drip pan. It worked perfectly that way.
I did have a problem however. I will post that problem in a separate thread.
Enjoy your cook! -
Look down about 20 threads. Some folks gave me some help last night.

If you haven't read the manual, I would it is here. Make sure you follow the calibration instructions. Regarding the pit probe, you should place it at grid level. I would not put it by the meat because it at first will cool that area. Most importantly make sure it is in an area that is well shielded by the heat offset (plate setter). If it is over one of the gaps on the plate setter, it is getting direct heat, which is not what you want.

Thanks for the suggestions. Happy New year.

Hi Danny
Welcome to the greatest forum! The Guru site has a page HERE on pit probe placement. The Guru site has a great wealth of information.
I sometimes use my DigiQ without placing the meat probe. For example if I am doing baby back ribs and do not want to place that probe in the thin meat to close to the bones I will just let it sit outside the egg. I also rearrange ribs as I cook them and having the meat probe in place would be inconvenient to reposition it when ever I rearrange the ribs. I believe you have to have both probes plugged in but you do not have to actively use them. The pit probe will maintain my fire perfectly and ribs are about the only thing I cook to time and not temperature.

I have a Digi Q and love it. I find that placing the pit probe on the grill next to your meat is the best place. With some experimentation you will LOVE your new gadget. I had my egg for several years before buying my Digi Q and do not regret it. Good luck. The problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

You'll love the Guru. It does have a little bit of a learning curve (at least for me it did). When I do ribs, and I'm following CWM's method, I clip the the alligator clip on the temp probe of the egg (because Mike's recipe calls for a dome temp). However, most of the recipes I use call for a grate temp, and I set the guru for that temp and clip directly to the grate, shielded from the fire (by plate setter or drip pan) and if possible, an inch or so away from the meat. I do use alot of Non BGE recipe's for my low and slow cooks. If you use recipe's off this forum, they are referring to dome temp, not grate temp. On this forum, if it doesn't explicitly say whether its dome or grate temp, its safe to assume its dome temp. Good Luck.

I have the CyberQ II and it definitely works without the food probe installed if you just want to use the pit probe. I use the pit probe a lot when I just want to regulate the pit temp without sitting outside and watching it. I also just clip the pit probe to the grate near the meat, keeping it about 2" away from the meat itself. You'll love it when you get used to using it!
