Prime Rib Adventure

I did a 4 rib roast on the BGE this weekend. Fired it up to 250 and put roast on. (Didn't realize that tip of BGE thermometer was touching the roast) I noticed that the temp was going down so I kept stoking it up. After about 1/2 hour I figured out that something was wrong because my remote meat thermometer was going wacko -up and down. By this time most of the charcoal had burned out and I had to replace it. After carefully removing the roast, I sloshed some of the fat in the drip pan down into the coals. Instant 4 foot high grease fire! I carefully dodged the flames and moved the plate setter on to the homemade wooden table that the egg sits in. Instant large burn into the wood in the shape of a platesetter! Closed the egg and the fire went out. (it was 35 degrees and raining steadily BTW). Regained my composure and reassembled everything. Cooked roast until internal was 140 and it still came out great!! Love the BGE.[p]Went looking for replacement for fried out temp probe and found that Radioshack has remote meat thermometers on sale $16 (model 63-1140)![p]Every cloud has a silver lining[p]Jon E.

  • JonE,[p]I'm typing this through tears laughter but I'm sorry you had such an experience. I'm sure everyone here has their own stories. Mine is burning nearly all of the hair off the front of my body from a huge flashbask, good thing I was wearing a pair of gym shorts or hot sparks on bear feet from the bottom vent. My lesson learned was to always wear closed toe shoes, long pants and a long sleaved shirt if possible. Welding gloves are a plus as well. What ever it takes it's worth it.[p]Have a great day, Semper Fi,[p]MC

  • JonE, nothing like a rough day with the Egg !! LOL! If you wrap the cable portion of your temp guage, but not the probe, that is inside the Egg, you will not burn out your probe. Just wrap it in aluminum foil.

  • Marine Cook,
And I quote '...good thing I was wearing a pair of gym shorts or hot sparks...' Is there ANYTHING you want to tell us about your normal cooking attire???? ;)[p]Funny stuff Guys.
