thermometers
Just bought large BGE Saturday. Have cooked twice, a roast and chicken. Think my first accessory will be a thermometer (for Christmas present from family). Would appreciate the help of this forum on which or what is the state of the art, most reliable, etc. In other words what would you advise without busting a budget ? [p]Seems like this forum is wonderful scource of really good information. I have spent hours reading it in the last few days.[p]Thanks in advance.[p]Murl

Murl, teltru.com has good thermometers made just for the EGG and other cookers as well.

Murl, welcome to the cult of the GREAT GREEN COOKER ! As to thermometer, you should have one that came with the Egg to indicate dome temperature. Some folks do replace that one with the Trutel brand. The real temperature guage you need is one to measure meat temperature. Polder or Taylor make good probe type (about $20); thermopen has the instant read type.(about $68 on the current special, which is a GREAT DEAL).

Murl, do a search on this site and others for a remote digital thermometer. They are great. Mine is sold under the Webber brand but others are available. If you are not familiar with them they have a sending unit that transmits a signal to the receiving unit. Mine transmits through the walls of the house to the furthest room from the egg. You set the receiver for pork, beef etc. Jim.

Murl,
Get yourself a poulder or other brand stick it in and leave it probe thermometer.[p]Go ahead and replace the egg thermometer with a tel tru if you don't want to wait for it to fog up or stop reading correctly.[p]A thermapen quick read is an excellent all around thermometer for everything egg and kitchen related.[p]If you feel like going to the wall, get yourself a Guru. The guru will not only read the meat temp, the temp near the meat or at the grill, but will also control a fan that maintains the right temperature throughout.[p]Here are the various links:[p]http://www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1356428[p]http://www.teltru.com/cart/detail.asp?subcat=16&product_id=23100566[p]http://www.thermoworks.com/products/thermapen/tpen_home.html[p]http://www.thebbqguru.com/products01.htm[p]HTH
